Brentford v Leeds United
Sunday 14th December@16:30 | Gtech Stadium

Leeds United face a daunting trip to Brentford this weekend, returning to a ground that has historically provided little joy for their travelling supporters. The Whites have managed just one win in their last 12 away league games against the Bees (D4 L7), and that solitary victory came in dramatic fashion on the final day of the 2021-22 season, a 2-1 triumph that secured their Premier League survival. That unforgettable clash saw Leeds benefit from a fortuitous penalty converted by Raphinha, Brentford reduced to nine men, and Jack Harrison striking in stoppage time to seal the great escape.

The capital has been an unhappy hunting ground for Leeds in recent years, with nine consecutive Premier League defeats in London since that May 2022 win. Brentford, meanwhile, have been formidable at home this season, losing just once in seven league outings and amassing 16 points, a tally bettered only by the division’s top three sides. Under Keith Andrews, the Bees have combined resilience with physical presence, and they will look to impose themselves in what promises to be a fierce aerial battle. Dominic Calvert-Lewin leads Leeds’ line and has contested 100 aerial duels, the third-highest in the league. He faces a stiff test against Sepp van den Berg, who ranks third for aerials won.

Brentford’s threat in the air extends to their forwards, with Igor Thiago, suspended Kevin Schade, and Dango Ouattara all among the Premier League’s top 10 aerially dominant attackers. Leeds, however, invested heavily in physicality and height last summer, preparing for exactly such contests. Brentford have a couple of selection concerns, with on-loan winger Reiss Nelson nursing a knock and Schade serving his one-match suspension after accumulating five bookings.

Daniel Farke is expected to stick with his 5-3-2 setup, buoyed by an impressive week that saw Leeds beat Chelsea 3-1 and draw 3-3 with Liverpool. Lukas Nmecha may return to partner Calvert-Lewin if he passes a late fitness test following a hamstring strain, while Jayden Bogle and Ethan Ampadu must tread carefully, each just one caution away from suspension. With Brentford’s home strength and Leeds’ renewed confidence, this fixture promises to be a tense and physically intense encounter; one that could either extend Leeds’ London woes or mark a memorable turnaround for Daniel Farke when only a week ago, his tenure seemed unsustainable.

Norwich manager sacked after that win

This is DFs chance to prove everyone who wanted him out to be wrong. It could demonstrate that he has it all under control and a win in London is a rare bird for Leeds. If we play with the same levels of commitment and do some real attacking we could do some real damage to Andrews and his side and start dragging them back into the relegation dog fight. I’m more optimistic than normally and going for a 0-2 win

If we lose tomorrow then Monday will be all about sacking Farke again.

The Leeds fan base can be the best in the world when they want to be but they can also be a real ball and chain around the teams ankle when things don't go right. Very pantomimesque lot.

This season, the booing of Harrison and now Aaronson really doesn't help anyone. We never learn. 3 games ago it was all about "Farke out" and lots of "I told you so" comments. At the moment it's "Farke In" and "he deserves to stay".

As Gessa alluded to, Brentford away is one of the toughest games but because it's Brentford we just think we deserve to turn up, get 3 easy points and anything else is a massive failure.

All I'm saying is that if we lose at Brentford then remain calm. We will lose lots of games from here on but we will collect more points too as we plod along. Its all about survival this season and if we stay up it's likely to be by the skin of our teeth. We cant be doing this flip flop stuff on the manager. We cant be booing our own players. It has to be together.

We've also got to remember that this 'sport' is not a level playing field.

Last season we should have been promoted because we have the best squad, the biggest budget etc etc. Alot of posters on here constantly remind us of this.

Well, the flip side is that we should be relegated this season because we have one of the worst squads and are not allowed to compete financially with the likes of Brentford and Bournemouth. If you look at it like that then even if we are relegated this season, is it really Farkes fault. He's meeting the expectation level of his squad.

If we stay up, Farke has done tremendously well. Is it fair to say he has exceeded expectations?

Whilst I agree with every word I’m sure you recognise that you’re asking water to run up hill.

We’ll be watching the Farke Hokey Cokey for the rest of the season.

This is one of those games where you think we have a chance, and so often you walk off with a defeat wondering why you played so badly. No superstars at Brentford, just seem able to stifle opponents at home and often give more gifted squads a chasing. Today will be interesting as you’d hope we match them in terms of effort and intensity. They play 4231 typically (in possession) so interesting to see how we line up.

Be great to get something from this and keep the mood/confidence up… but it’s a tough game. Hell they all are.

Can’t abide Keith Andrew, from the time he was on Sky Sports as a summariser/analyst and pundit covering the Championship. He was always negative about us. Hope we give him nothing to smile about today.

A draw a reasonable return, but I hope we stuff these.
Totally agree on that one. Rubbish pundit. Let’s wipe that effing smile off his face ha
