Your manager has a yes/no decision to make as to whether he wants to be interviewed with regards to the vacant Liverpool FC managers job. Thats it. But Swansea fans are on 'our' board discrediting 'our' club and drawing an imaginary equal comparison between Swansea City and 'our' club. Wtf do you expect a pat on the ****ing back.
I agree the press have had a field day, but is it deserved? Once the press decide they're after you there's little you can do about it. Look at England managers, politicians, celebrities of any kind. Public image is largely presented through the media so those who control the media control the image. Especially in the eyes of those who are either too stupid or too lazy to look for the truth behind the headlines.
You do realise I'm a Liverpool fan? And no I don't think they were doing that in all honesty, but to be fair to them they finished just 5 points behind us whereas we finished 17 points behind 4th place. I know it's hard as a Liverpool fan to accept we aren't quite the club we were. But a lot of fans need to take a reality check and realise this will be our 3rd season without Champions League and our 3rd season finishing in a poor position for our standards. If we are consistently finishing in these areas in the league it suggests that we aren't having a 'blip', we just aren't what we once were as a club and we all need to face that. Mouthing off to Swansea fans and having a superiority complex only makes us all look like bitter, history-hugging morons. Of course we have a glorious history, but we need to face facts and re-evaluate our goals. We are in the worst position as a club that I have experienced as a Liverpool fan, this is the first season I remember where we have finished 8th and certainly the first time we have gone 3 seasons without Champions League football. All I'm saying is that Swansea fully deserved to be where they finished, and we fully deserved to be where we finished. Which makes you wonder if making a comparison (based on the pitch, not on finances or history or global fame) between ourselves and Swansea is really that ludicrous. No I'm not a WUM, I'm just tired of fans who think we are something that we just aren't anymore. Maybe it's because I'm a younger fan and I've experienced fewer glory days, barring 2009 I haven't really experienced a truly great Liverpool team (it really was much better than 2005, 2001). Oh well if you think I'm a WUM then so be it. I just think we all need to have a sit down and realise just exactly what position we are in as a club.
I suppose at times it hasn't been deserved. But if we want to be seen as a big club then we have to take the inevitable flack that comes with the mistakes. Buying Downing, Henderson and Carroll for extortionate fees obviously turned a lot of heads but they were almost doomed to inadequacy from the go because expectations were so high due to the money spent. I really like the latter two players but I think for a club in our position you can expect the press to scrutinise the deals, and you'd have to say as it stands we certainly paid over the odds. And as much as I backed Suarez over the whole furore, I do think as a club we handled it awfully.
Fair enough, your not a wum you're a red. If you read this thread from the beginning you'll see that i amongst others praised Rodgers for his loyalty to Swansea, then as the thread gets bigger the wumming started from the Swansea fans, and because the thread is still open and their ****e comments about LFC are still visible they should expect the same in return. As for 'I'm just tired of fans who think we are something that we just aren't anymore',we were 1 week away from going into administration a couple of years back and its a long hard road back, yet the club is debt free, back in the top 10 richest clubs in the world,in transition etc etc. So out of curiosity whats your personal definition of a 'big' club crumpet?
A club that can perform off and on the pitch. We have everything in place to be one of football's great super powers behind the scenes. We have a magnificent history, a huge fanbase and a global brand. But that all comes to nothing if you aren't performing now. The longer we go without Champions League Football, the harder it will be to attract quality players which will make it infinitely harder to ever climb back to the top in a money-dominated league. Leeds United have a fantastic history, but they're obviously a world apart from the football elite, and the longer we stay away from the elite ourselves, the harder it will be to get back up there and the slide towards mediocrity will occur. It seems bizzare for older fans to consider Liverpool as a mediocre team, but we need to be realistic. As it stands we are distinctly average and nothing more.
Spot on - I've been saying this for a while and it's why we need a high profile name as manager or Sporting Director to attract the better players. We can only rely on our history/brand for so long before it becomes redundant.
Also apologies then. I hadn't read the whole thread, I merely saw Rubadub referring to Swansea as a 'two-bob joke club' which just really pissed me off as a football fan. I really do admire them for what they've done, and a bitter fan with a superiority complex isn't going to change that.
It is important that we get back in the Champions League so that we have the finances to buy the right players for the club. I don't think we'll have a problem attracting the players though as we tend to go for the up and coming players other than the world stars.
A lot of posters on here are a bit defensive as we get a lot of wums and it can mean that at times the wrong poster gets a bit of a grilling.
But 'up-and-coming' players at the moment tend to be the stars I've noticed. It appears acceptable in today's market to splash £20-30 million on potential alone (not to mention extortionate wages). So I feel we'll struggle to even attract young talent because of the huge competition at the moment for anyone young and slightly talented.
As the club believed Suarez was wrongly convicted, then they were right to stand by him imo. With hindsight it's easy to see they didn't do a very good PR job on it, but that doesn't make them wrong in principle. Don't forget it's the same people in the media who are condemning our handling of it, as were slagging us off in the first place, so what can we expect? I think there's a tendency even amongst our own fans to believe the negative hype because it's been so overwhelming. I agree with your evaluation of the players mentioned, but you take a chance buying players, some work out, some don't. All you can do is take stock and decide where to go from there. The fact that you're a younger supporter is probably an important point ( sadly I'm not ). Those of us who remember the real glory days obviously long to get them back. The fact that other fans call us delusional doesn't make it so. We don't believe we have an automatic right to anything we haven't earned, and we know there's work to be done, but we have to believe it's achievable. We've never been lower than 8th in 50 years, remember- no other club comes anywhere near that level of consistency, so although we may be off the pace at the moment, it doesn't mean we should just accept accusations of mid-table mediocrity from others.
You're right if you are talking about Premier League players, last summer was crazy. I still think a manager with good European knowledge will pick up players at the right price and that those players will still be very happy to come to Liverpool. If we continue this trend of not getting into the Champions League then it will become harder to get these players but I don't think we are at this point yet.
I saw dubs comment as defending the team he supports in response to similar comments from Swansea fans(but lets agree to disagree on that),i aint got nothing against the Swans and i also agree that Rodgers is doing a great job and got them playing a good on the eye passing game. But if the Swans fans want to have 'banter' with us on our board they'll have to enjoy/endure our comments(imo).
Fair enough I can agree with that, Newcastle are evidence that you can still sign quality players on the cheap if you look in the right places. And no, honestly I don't think we're at that point yet either otherwise I think players like Reina and Suarez would have jumped ship already. I just don't think we can expect to have the same allure if we continue to finish below the top 4.
Whelan has got beachball head lined up if Martinez gets the job. "Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has revealed he would not rule out former manager Steve Bruce should he need to find a replacement for Roberto Martinez. Bruce had a brief spell in charge of the Latics in 2001 before returning between 2007 and 2009. Whelan says the two of them still have a good relationship. "Steve Bruce is someone I've always got on with," he said in the Daily Mirror. "I never sacked him. He left for Sunderland but we've remained on good terms. "I've not spoken to anyone yet and I don't need to because there are one or two excellent managers around at the moment who aren't in work." http://www.clicklancashire.com/spor...tic-chairman-whelan-open-to-bruce-return.html
