Yeah, and in the main they were either mediocre or crap, with occasional blips of minor success. They did win the FA Cup the year after us, it's true. Of course, they had little more money than anybody else back then, so that was probably it. The PL was practically designed for ManU.
Back to Liverpool ... It'll be a brave or foolhardy person who takes on this job. Hodgson did a great job at Fulham but died at Liverpool. This is just one example of managers who have had their reputations trashed. Dalglish is another, and even Benitez and Houllier "failed" by the unrealistic standards of LFC. Brenda looked a good manager at Swansea and has been shredded.
Trouble is anyone going to Liverpool these days, as a manager, take on a reputation as well a team. The "only have to turn up days, for a win" Have truly gone and winning purely because they expect to win is now a non starter. Before he went to Liverpool Brendan seemed to me to be very level headed. Sadly it did not take him long to believe he was gods gift to all managers and teams, after he caught the Liverpool bug. He steadied the ship after he arrived, but he didn't master the art of managing the "big star players". They were problems he had not dealt with and over a few seasons his attempts to do that went down hill badly. With the obvious result the team went down hill too. They do have some decent players but no real stars stand out anymore.
Yeah. It used to be Everton you went to if you wanted to ruin your career. Their fans have learned to live with having a decent team who will probably not win the league again, but settle for Cup runs and some good football.
Indeed. Don't let my brief analysis be confused with sympathy! Their managers will continue to fail until the expectations penny drops.
When I first moved to the North West, there was a scouse joke about a Man Utd bra - loads of support but no cups! They were mediocre for years following the Busby European Cup winning year. They did get close to the title in '92 but lost out to .... Leeds, and where are they now? The PL was almost certainly perfect for United - massive "brand" that was well run and had the Midas touch with everything they did. But remember it was the so called "Big 5" who drove the argument for its establishment. Anyone like to name the Big 5? Liverpool and Spurs are in there, making it surely the pipe-dreaming 5!
What will be interesting is when the new manager comes in, what will he do with all the ex Saints flops New manager will want to start to bring his own recruits during the January window so I expect an exodus to balance squad size and finances out....who first? Lovren? T**tbeard? or even Clyny who hasn't exactly had the best of starts for his new club Will be interesting
This is a year or so old, but is relevant and really funny - I don't remember seeing it last year. It is subtitled, but is still better with volume on.
You can't pass the buck with "transition". Football is always "in transition". which club has had no element of transition during his three years in charge?
