i read yesterday we offered to send people to patrol the beaches, but the French refused, dark nights coming in no lights it was only a matter of time before a tragedy

still dont know how many on the boat no clue of survivors or who the dead are i bet the Familys are worried sick, French have to do something now

Absolutely. And reading that they set off in some sort of 'vessel' akin to a paddling pool. I mean WTF is going on at the French end? There are young babies getting into these things. Putting the immigration side of it out of the way for a second, how can someone watch them get into a 'paddling pool' and set off over the channel? Surely the French can see it needs to stop.

I get the impression the French aren't arsed as it means they are not using their welfare system etc.

German boats, delivered to French beach by lorry, migrants move to beach from Belgium to board @£3k pp, a boat last week carried 80 = £240k, big Big business moved on from paddle boats used earlier this year.

Some French bloke blaming British for not implementing rules. Australia did and the migrants stopped overnight.

They are clearly that desperate for a better life that they see being on that dinghy as an option - its so sad that it has to be like this.

I don't understand how French coppers (mothers and father's themselves patrolling the beaches) can stand by and watch these people climb into a paddling pool and try to navigate the English channel, it's mental. If they (the French coppers) are supposed to be protecting life, then they should be putting a knife into these 'boats' to stop them leaving the shores. It's in nobody's interests that these 'vessels' leave France. How these people get to France etc. Is a different discussion, but no boats should be leaving France in this way with babies on board.

The french love to get one over us, even, allegedly, the police directing immigrants to where the boat suppliers are. But they are overstepping the mark by playing with lives.

That is the problem.

These aren't asylum seekers fleeing to save their lives, they are economic migrants who can already afford to pay thousands of euros to people smuggling gangs, yet they know they can earn far more in the UK.

The current rules re asylum were made in the expectation that they would apply to limited numbers of people who were being persecuted in their home state, not that they would be abused by thousands of people who just want a better life in a more highly developed country.

The only way these deaths will be stopped is to halt this type of mass migration over thousands of miles.

The only way to do that is for the USA, UK, EU and every european country to co-sponsor introduction of international guidance legislation at the UN that will stipulate that asylum seekers must seek asylum in the first country the UN deem safe that is reached after leaving their home country.

If this isn't done then people smuggling gangs will continue to overload unseaworthy boats onto the med and the channel and migrants will continue to drown.

Charities patrolling the med to rescue migrants set out upon the sea in unseaworthy boats by people smuggling gangs don't solve the problem, they make things worse.

In just a few years we have seen the people smuggling gangs tactics change so they now no longer plan for or supply the boats sufficiently well for them to be able to survive the sea crossings, just for them to stay afloat long enough for the people to be rescued.

I thought the rule that refugees must claim asylum in the first country they reach was already in place, Draig. By not claiming refuge in the first country they land in they cease to be refugees and become immigrants, as you’ve already said. But no European country will enforce the rule because they just want shot of them so they settle a few old scores by helping them to UK.

I think the is the first country that processes them (finger printed etc). Obviously if you don't process them they can move on.

To me though, a genuine refugee would just want to be safe and therefore would stop where they first arrived.
