total waste of time, no idea why my post grabbed the attention of the local arguer (maybe something said in the past, who knows with him)...there is nothing in my post that i can see that is much different to others, i cannot for instance see where i stated that we took loads more than anyone else and at no point mentioned germany.

the point of the OP as i saw it, was to bring to our attention that a tragedy had occured and that set people off wondering why those people took such a risk to get here, which all but one have discussed, and why the french (who we have paid a nice chunk of money and are meant to be helping) seem to be turning a blind eye and not willing to work with us...but that pretty much sums them up as they do not like working with us on most things it seems.

what i would like to ask you all is, am i the only one that does not trust 'official' figures and am i alone in thinking that many more are taking the chance and arriving without being seen?

We never get told the truth. There are other beaches than channel beaches.

I never went looking to argue with anybody. I think I've only logged on here 2 or 3 times this month. I posted most of the day yesterday without any problems. I simply asked if you could prove what you were saying... You couldn't so diverted attention by weirdly having a pop at me saying I come on here to argue.


I'll be blunt about it, now, though. It's not my fault you are a racist prick. The black and brown people aren't coming to hurt you. Chill out.

The trouble with facts & figures is that it's all too easy for us to choose those that best suit our argument, I do it myself

But they can polarise the debate and draw attention away from the overall situation. In the grand scheme of things we're failing to find any way of working with the French and using Twitter to fire shots at them really isn't big or clever. It's 'nur nur ne nur nur' politics and does us no credit imo.

Priti Patel has made a complete mess of this situation by any facts and figures, we'll make no progress with her as Home Secretary imo.

i watched some reporter on the news after this latest tragedy interviewing migrants in french camps waiting for their chance to cross, the mother interviewed gave her reason for wanting to get to England was because ' they keep the family together', nothing more or less. pretty sad really, but that was all she wanted.

It's because they're being told there's an amazing life in the UK awaiting them and that's why they're doing it.

If I was trying to pull a fast one in life, I'd stop when I needed to cross the channel in the middle of November in a dinghy that genuinely puts my life in big danger.

We do need to get a grip of the situation, though. Mainly to protect these people. We need to find a way where they're making their claims properly. No idea what the solution is, mind.

not sure either marra, but we've already given 'assistence' of £54 million to the french authorities to police their own coastal borders, i'm pretty sure we could have bought off the people smuggler gangs for a lot less!!!

The solution is long and complicated.

For one thing this is not new. For decades now, at varying times this has been happening. Inceasingly through these times , various Home Secretaries have been shown to be on the point of powerlessness, due to the human rights industry, the highly politicised judiciary, (many of whom now openly see themselves as law MAKERS, rather than interpreters) , a Home Office which has always been reluctant to back any necessary action and which is now more or less in opposition to the elected government of the day.

Unless these matters are sorted, nothing can effectively be done. Add to that, even the vague suggestion of action will have hours on end of hostile BBC, Sky and much other media coverage. It might be hard to believe, but some people still believe the BBC is an impartial voice.

This calamity is neither new, of the immigrants making, France's fault, or the UK's fault. It is a result of a rapidly changing world, easier travel and communication, gangsters making money and many people here, in France and elsewhere who are determined to prevent any real change, many of them making a very good living doing so.

It was supposed to have been paid but was withheld by Patel and is due to be paid in instalments as far as I can gather.

He says the Greeks have nailed it with illegal boat immigrants, they simply hitch on to the dinghy, tow it back to its origin shore, offload personnel, then fill the dinghy with bullets. Much as the idea will no doubt appeal to many, I can see the odd snag or two, were Gov UK to try this.

Any official boat, say RN or Coast Guard, entering French waters towing a dingy full of 'illegals', might just give Macron, or ANY French President, all the excuses in the World to massive bursts of rightous indignation.

And of course the Crew Members of the towing Boat would themselves be entering France Illegaly, so, if caught, and you can bet that the French Police and Navy, would try VERY hard for this, would likely face quite long prison sentences.
Then the idea of discharghing weapons on french soil, or in French Waters, is hardly likely to be overlooked.

Sound fine in theory, but a total disaster if put into practice.

Surprised they don't just spray the dinghy and occupants with bullets whilst out at sea - save on fuel costs, prevent any repeat attempts at clandestine crossings and hit the people smuggling gangs in their pockets. Oar, alternatively, just stick them in trireme - the environmentalists would love it!

As well as inflatable boats crossing from Turkey, the Greeks were also getting rigid boats crossing from Libya toward Crete (maybe lost or disabled boats that were originally heading for Italy, or maybe boats towed out and cast adrift to await rescue by the Greek navy).
