Sorry but that just naive and short sighted. It won't stop at this. Sure, it'll stay that way for a few years maybe but not forever. They've talked about forming a separate European super league for decades.

This would be a perfect stepping stone for them to test the water before eventually go completely separate if it suits.

Not sure. Think would be even more opposition than this and just would be absolute carnage. They’d also need to expand it massively as not enough money in just yet woukdnt have thought.

Who knows, maybe in 10-15 years could be right. I’m too young to remember when Prem was formed but by sounds of it that had just as much outrage and now no one thinks anything of it...

Personally I'm looking forward to the @Zanjinho match day threads for the super League. Be interesting to see what dynamic he adds to spice up the information

so there are a few things to be said:

    a) garry neville. He showed once again his absolute hatred and if it was directed at a non white group he would be fired. Not once in his rant but twice he went at LFC and in particular the city and fans. He mentioned utd once, he never mentioned city or chelsea. he had a brief go at arsenal i think. His antics are quite consistent but in the main its populist ranting.

    b) this whole thing is a power play. I looked at the numbers. The US owners clearly feel they can do a better job than Uefa in marketing " the product" and will make far more money. Uefa revenue is half that of the prem. clearly this league format with 20 team including 5 allowed in for doing something in some other arena gives more games so more money.

    c) Nobody is leave a domestic league. So all the ranting about that is pointless. It is everything people say it is, but there will still be a merseyside derby should the english premier league want it. clearly the 6 are saying you lot can't join the big boy party but nobody is saying someone can't win the english league beating man city to it.

    d) the money in the Prem as i outline yesterday is "fairer" in terms if merit and popularity paying to teams. As i showed spurs were only 19mil less in money by being 6th compared to LFC in 6th. I think I outlined how real sociedad were 100mil euros less than barca. Clearly this worries the "big 6" and they want to protect themselves.

    e) a lot of people are having a rant about points deductions and relegations. I also thought about this and feel its a pointless endeavour that will just push these clubs closer together. Agan I recall the PDC and BDO, the BDO sought to ban players and all of that and guess what. the BDO barely registers now. The same ranty sky guys are on the other hand selling the **** out of the PDC for example.

    f) a lot of people have decided to target players. Guess what, they all moved to china when offered a lot of money when there was no good stadiums, fans, boredom and all of that. If fif target players they will simply end up hurting themselves as the premier global competition and highest wages will speak volumes.

Being clear it is wrong and it is shabby to see that the European cup with all its history from 1956 will be binned. That famous trophy will be consigned to the scrap heap. That said It is a power play that UEFA have only said they will try to sue. It hasn't been a very strong response thus far IMO. If we leave all the rants aside someone now has to really respond.

How they respond will really tell us something. It is clear there is a clash on two topics. First merit (the 6 want in no matter what, the world wants pure merit reward) and second revenue. Revenue is easily resolved by following the proposed model in the european CL. the merit piece is the big challenge

in 1990 all 22 clubs resigned from the football league and set up their own business in effect.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foundation_of_the_Premier_League

    you can read about it.

the big 5 at the time including everton decided there was more money to be made if big clubs were playing. In effect the 22 clubs ran off and took all the money for themselves.

guess what. 15 clubs are running away with all the european money for themselves in 2021.

theres no difference there. the difference now is the premier league eventually got to the point where relegation and promotion were agreed with the football league and that resolve the merit part Todays proposal locks in the 15 founding clubs plus just 5 merit based positions.

I've said this many times about VAR. No matter how ****ty something is people get used to it. Things get ruined and people forget how they once were and stop caring.
Younger generations have no memory of anything different so just accept it anyway.

Only they won’t have a choice if they push on with this. They’d be in beach of their PL contracts by signing up to a new league without the permission of both their current domestic league and the governing bodies.

They could choose to play this thing, but it’d be completely unrecognised in the football world and they’d be completely on their own. The idea that everyone is simply going to bend over and accept this is for the birds.

long term i agree, they will have thought of this..

A "20 club" tournament" can be morphed over time to become a 20 club single division with the potential to add 20more clubs for a second division.

A complete separation is always possible when it mokes most financial sense. It is entirely logical conclusion to this plan.

If greed is the number 1 thought to maximise revenue then of course it will be a logical conclusion that if the english prem doesn't have enough cash compared to an expanded super league then boom they will do it.

And again if the premier league wants to implode it can push them that hard. the harder they push the more they drive them together. It is a bareface unilateral action from 6 clubs.

They are saying there you go, if you think us signing up to a different european competition breaks your rules enough to expel then best of luck making up the revenue with the tv companies.

I am personally surprised only 3 italian clubs are involved.

In the end it is "mostly" pushing uefa and daring fifa to intervene. Fifa have nothing to intervene on yet. the ball is now in uefa's court to give this big clubs something more.

As I outlined last night in 2000 and the g14 there has been these power plays. probably before that

There’s a world of difference between this and formation of the PL though. For a start off it had the support of the FA.

The PL retained its place in the football pyramid, based on keeping the principle of merit. All that basically happened was a rebranding of the top tier of the game, the opportunity for a L1 club to come through the pyramid and win the thing was not lost *hello Leicester*

This proposal sees clubs self appointing themselves as the elite, forming a closed shop league, with some currently undefined section on 5 places being open for ‘merit’. On what basis? Annual? A fixed term contract? Given that the founding members can’t face relegation, what aspect of ‘merit’ is ticked there? Who decides it? Them? On a whim? It’s bollocks, and would lock out most European nations clubs from being part of it on ‘merit’.

To say this akin to the PL formation is disingenuous.

They want both, they can’t make this viable with retaining PL membership, the breakaway clubs need the PL, and they’re not going to get both. The PL will survive without them, yes it’s revenues will likely drop, but it’ll cut its cloth accordingly, they’ve gone too far this time, let the stand off commence.

ah yes but why did it have the FA's support?

Out of the goodness of the FA's heart or as a power play by the FA to weaken the football league? since the Premier league came in the FA have had far more money and power to play with that in theory it ever had.

the key outcome of the 2 years of negotiations and several years of talking before that was that the football pyramid was protected with the relegation etc. There was a time as i recall that was not assured. I recall very simialr discussions with a closed shop.

We should also note that the all 22 clubs thing was also discussed with an 18 tema format proposed but again they fudged it to keep 22 and then quietly dropped 2 teams a very short time later.

    So it is similar

As for the self appointing. We are in agreement. who knows what sort of merit based system. It could be holding 3 seats open for Bayern, PSG (who are pure political animals and no doubt have just gone the opposite to their middle east rivals just to be awkward) and maybe dortmund or someone.

The 5 could be champions of other leagues for all I or you know. It is a pure protectionist set up I agree. I just think its outlining where these clubs see themselves and where they want uefa to go.

If you gave england 6 places tomorrow i nthe CL someone would not be happy as west ham are too good FFS.

the reality is the formation of the premier league was all about money too. It is similar. times might have changed but the base motivation has not. Its just that we are at day 1 of the negotiations not the end date.

The rem was founded after negotiation and bartering. The next step in this thing is the same horse trading.

I do find amusing the outfall about this from some who care more about the unfairness this creates and not their own economic fairness.

Get angry at football owners greed, but not the government and big businesses. All this is is a more relatable format.

Put that way makes it look like no more than a simple power play, and all the pros-and-cons discussions just distractions.

    why can't they?

you are not answering that, you are making statements that this or that can't but not giving good reason why it can't.

I agree that this competition on its own is no more viable than the Champions league on its own. We are in agreement there and on the fact that its all a load of balls.

But why do you think that having a different, closed shop, european competition is something the other 14 clubs cannot and will not allow and why do you think the premier league will survive in the same format without its biggest 4 clubs ( i'm not even putting arsenal or spurs in that its ridiculous they are even in this discussion)

My view is out of pure self interest the other 14 clubs will grumble and moan but know that their revenues are cored out with massive liabilities if they truly force the issue. they will see eventually that they must retain the 6 but that they retain their power of voting in the PL so will most likely just grumble and whine until uefa resolve the situation.

Lets be honest here. Half the prem don't even want to qualify for europe, they seek 40 points. Survival and the gravy is what they want.

I just think that the top 6 have seen the issues corona continuing has caused in revenues and clearly feel the others clubs are weak enough as is uefa to push this.

the reality imo is uefa are too weak to survive as a relevant organization with a diminished CL so they will negotiate

Domestic leagues will shoot themselves in the foot if they ban the big clubs for entering the SL. Whether you like it or not, it's the big clubs who bring in the big commercial and tv deals.

If you kick them out, expect to see the PL have their matches shown on BBC and ITV and the rest the league will suffer financially.

Not saying it's right - but that's how it is unfortunately.

True. Boris being right out having a say is pure populist rubbish. he won't do a thing but he's got his soundbite in.

Over 20 years, 30 year we have seen club after club destroyed by terrible ownerships and not once as anyone cared. Every time i say city are a blight on the game for "fairness" and so are chelsea I get told its only cos my club can't win more. so it was fine for city to spend oil money and fake sponsorships and all was well 24 hours ago but now these clubs are the worst i nthe world and we don't need them?

We have seem blackburn ruined for example, we have seen ashley at newcastle do what he does and be hated for it yet the club has never fallen apart. we saw bates ruin chelsea chasing then sell up the the russian oligarch and state backed oil baron. We've seen leeds implode, we've seen clubs like sunderland, villa and others utterly ruined.

but not once did politicians give a damn.

I would say amazon, apple tv, disney, et al are lining up to hear more about this product right now.

remember the premier league started with talk of more money and itv and morphed into SKY gazumping and taking over.

all the ranting on sky this morning all sounds like they are upset they don't have the CL rights and fear they won't get these rights either.
