you know what i mean by no 1 jersey... all first choice keepers are called the no1... I think that he's a nice guy, a trier and i've no issue with him par se... unlike so many second string keepers we've had.... anyone rememebr the guy who was SO BAD Rafa brought in jones from southamption o na one match loan? I mean how the hell do we let that happen. FOr the record brad has improved with games, he's a long way from the guy who came on in the cup... saved a pen then threw one in! But converesely he's a long way from being a dependable first choice player and frankly if we dropped reina to get him to buck up.... well if we need to do that to get through to him he's not the pro we need is he? reina needs to resolve his concentration issues... the same as suarez needs to actually aim some of his shots... but both are still great players aren't they? Jones has had skertl, agger and wisdom in front of him playing mighty and dare i say it did they threaten us last night before traore came on and put himself about? E'tto was so deep he was in his own half! lets keep progressing and picking up 1and 2-0 wins if we can from now til jan 1..... lets get our best team out there and for me the guy who stood out was not jones but assaidi who was a fantastic out ball for us all night, he never stopped running... he made a big impression in terms of staking a claim for a first team shirt.
I think Brad's doing ok, but I think he knows he's only ever going to be back up in a team with our aspirations. Reina's going through a tough period but he is a class above. Jones seems like a nice guy, and I fear that many of those who are calling for him to be first choice will be the first to go for his knackers when he makes an (inevitable) costly error.
My confidence in Jones has improved. Reina is always first pick now but I'm not scared anymore when Jones is in goal. He is a competant backup.
"He's kept 3 clean sheets, he should keep his place".... I could have kept those 3 clean sheets too, it's not like he made a real save in all three matches. So arguments that keeping those clean sheets validates him keeping his place is silly. The clean sheets are down to the quality, or lack thereof, of the opposition. Now I'm not a Brad hater, but I do tense up when someone passes back to him, and it is only going to be more time not making mistakes that is going to stop that reaction. But unless I start seeing cat like, world class saves, all the time he is getting is counting for nothing, as he has not done anything that a Sunday league keeper couldn't handle. I think that having to sit out 3 matches injured will be enough motivation for Pepe, especially with his replacement keeping clean sheets, he already has a lot to prove to himself and to us. So I vote Pepe back in at the weekend, but Brad back in against the Russians.
I agree with part of this but not all. I certainly don't to want to see him making cat-like saves all the time as it means the defence is being consistently breached.
totally agree. its what i think... though i'd say any pro keeper rather than sunday league. and i'd agree that a couple of game saving moments would do him more good than 3 regulation clean sheets without incident.
Whilst we're on the topic of balls being passed back to the keeper, I tense up when that happens to Reina too. Both of our keepers look like they could easily spoon a kick straight to the opposition. But I agree with Noblelox too, I think missing these games and seeing his competition do fairly well in these games will be enough motivation for Pepe to realise that he isn't indispensible to Liverpool.
I'm ok when someone passes back to Reina. It's a bit scary at times when he holds on to it for too long and starts dribbling, but he's a much better ball player than most 'keepers. And his distribution is pretty good imo.
I just don't see the same rock-solid presence between the sticks in Reina that I used to in 06'-09'. This drop in form has been coming for a few years now, the blunders started creeping in more frequently. I just hope the fact we've finally got a decent(-ish) back-up 'keeper in Jones will maybe push him more. His commitment, you have to say, has been questionable since Rafa left.
In all honesty how many second string keepers are going to be top quality. If they are that good then they want to be number one. United,Chelsea, spurs have all had their share of poor second choice keepers. I think a lot of you are being too hard on jones, he has done little wrong and ,because of reinas form and lack of injuries, has had little chance to impress. Any player who flits in and out of a team cannot be expected to be in top form for that brief spell. All that you can hope is that while they are playing they give of their best and don't drop any clangers. As far as I can see he has always the former and not too many of the latter. Given pepe's cockups this season then jones cannot be criticised too much ( kicking could be improved mind). I think the fringe players in any squad have a difficult time coming in for maybe one or two games and we expect that to be on top of their game straight away.
What are people thinking about Jones now? He deserved to keep his spot for the derby, 100% agree with Rodgers on that call. Wasn't completely convinced today though... Reina lately makes silly ****ups like dropping the ball or palming it into his own goal whereas Jones seems to just have fundamental problems being a keeper like positioning or not knowing when to claim a ball in the air. Who do we start next game?
