Getting pumped for this Ward/Kovalev fight now, it's fight week! I've picked up a few bob tonight and see a Kovalev KO is 9/2 with Skybet. I'm taking that, I think that's a fecking huge price with his punching power even against arguably the smartest boxer on the planet.
 
Well it looks like the Mayweather - McGregor prefight bullshit has now been launched into overdrive. If they're to whip up extreme interest in this so called half a billion dollar fight, they have to paint "The Notorious" as a serious threat to the man known as "Money." Buggered if I can see how anyone can consider this charade as anything more than a circus act, but cash is cash and the show must go on. Below are a few excepts from Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe, concerning the affair. The bout is to take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on August 26.

"This is a fight that Floyd is taking very, very seriously, because we all do know all it takes in boxing is one shot and he don’t have to be a clean shot, a guy with that kind of power, he can nick you and you can be buzzed. There’s been a few times in fights in Floyd’s career that he might have been buzzed in the fight and nobody never knew."

“Floyd is 40 years old, he’s been off for a minute. He’s gotta get his ass up and be prepared for Conor McGregor. Conor McGregor has been active, you know what I’m saying? He’s been knocking guys out. And we’d be a bunch of damn fools to sit around and sleep on this and listen to all the bullshit that everybody sits around and talks. No, nuh uh. Floyd’s ass is getting out there and getting up running. And he’s coming. He knows Conor McGregor is coming after him and Floyd is looking to get his ass up out of there, too.”

“This is a total different feel from the Pacquiao fight, because this is the unknown factor, the unknown factor. Conor McGregor, when he steps in there, his stand up game, I’m very damn impressed with it. It’s like, he don’t even look like he throw his shots hard, but he’s so slick with it, when he touches guys, even if he grazes them, it’s like, excuse my French, it’s like, ‘Damn, he ****ed him up.’ It’s like next thing you know they’re stretched out and wobbling around the ring. I’m like, Man, he better not graze Floyd with one of them shots.”

Complete and utter farce. Disgrace to boxing it's no more than an exhibition match and its going to get Floyd to 50-0 beating Marcianos record. ****ing appalling and that's all I'll be saying on the subject it isn't worthy of my time as a boxing fan

It's easy to see why boxing pundits think Ward will be too good for Kovalev. There can be no doubt that after being dumped on his backside, Ward managed to find the key to Kovalev and easily took most of the second half of the fight. Logic says that he now knows the way to get the job done, he doesn't have to go searching for the key any more. Obviously both men think they can win this fight, but I have to be impressed by Ward's promise that we'll see another him. "You're going to see a different guy in there on Saturday night. This is my favourite time. Show and tell time." He said.

Kovalev was a pissed man at the presser. He mocked Ward's "Son of God" nick name and called Ward "Son of Judges." Showing that he'd had a gut full of the proceedings, Kovalev stormed off the set and left via the back door, after pointing a finger at Ward and saying. "I already said enough and I will prove it June 17. And you get prepared."

This is all looking a bit on the tasty side. :)

According to the Nevada State Athletic Commission, Andre Ward's purse for the bout is a guaranteed $6.5 million. Main Events CEO Cathy Duva told reporters that Sergey Kovalev will get 75% of Main Events' 40% cut of the promotion’s net revenue. If the PPV numbers are the same as the first fight, Kovalev will only get about a million.

Kovalev's manager, Egis Klimas, said. “Sergey is earning every single penny. He is promoting this fight as much as he can. Every single penny comes from the fans – from the ticket sales, from the pay-per-view, Sergey is earning. Nobody’s giving it to him.”

An interesting aside to the fight, is the payout for the Guillermo Rigondeaux - Moises Flores bout which is on the undercard. At just his seventh fight, the Cuban expat Rigondeaux took the WBA Interim Super Bantamweight title. He defended it once before taking the full belt. He's since run his career tally to 17, claiming the WBO title to go with his WBA belt. He is the classic boxer. A lot of people don't like the way he fights. Often his bouts are labelled boring events, but the fact remains, he's long been a well respected P4P fighter. He's among the best around. So what does a man of his calibre earn when he risks his two titles against Moises Flores? Just $120,000. The challenger gets $25,000.

The business of boxing takes in considerably more than the skill of the athletes. At the big end of town, it's more to do with sensationalism and the marketing of it. To me personally, the guaranteed $6.5 million is a massive payout, but I'd happily take a pounding for it, and I don't for a second begrudge SOG the money. But seriously, how must the best combatants in the fight scene feel when the likes of Conor McGregor can swan in and then head for the hills with a possible $100,000,000 stashed away in his swag? Again, one of the best boxers on the planet, Guillermo Rigondeaux, will receive $120,000.

Well there it is. Lots of fouls and plenty of whinging, but today Andre Ward's fitness and class proved too much for the more uncultured Sergey Kovalev. Ward was again outdone in the first half of the fight, but his brilliance won out. Kova complained of low blows, and there were a few, but by the time the stoppage came, he'd run out of fuel. I'm a Kovalev fan, but I have to admit, he's not really in Ward's class.

Premature stoppage no doubt. Should have given him a count and let him continue. I really can't understand the refs decision to call it when he did. Only thing I can think is he though Kovalev was quitting by sinking to the canvas. Shocking officiating from a very experienced referee. I'm not sure if the blows that finished it were necessarily low, was difficult to tell from the angles but they looked borderline at worst for me. The rule is, on the waste band or above, that's why some boxers wear their shorts really high up. He was hurt by the big right hand and he was gassing it would seem, it's never a good sign to see a boxer repeatedly complain to the referee.I have to agree though Cyc Ward looked class. Kovalev was trying to use his jab to good effect and it worked early on but he was missing a lot and the quality of movement, variety of punches, etc from Ward was the difference. I'd still like to see the Trilogy despite it being 2-0. There's been controversy surrounding both fights so would be nice to have one without the controversy. Kovalev is quality and it'll hurt to lose again especially under these circumstances and he'll definitely come again.

Referee seemed clueless should have been a no contest. It was clearly after the bell, they both threw a punch. I can't believe the ref took so long to make a decision speaking to anyone he could find ringside and even looking at replays. I didn't even realise they were allowed to use replays that's why it has to be the refs call only. Shambles

I was disappointed by Ward-Kovalev in so many ways. Disappointed how it was stopped prematurely, disappointed how controversial the final few blows were in ending it and hugely disappointed in Kovalev full stop. His performance and him looking at the ref for help in that last round. I don't know what to make of him now, has he been a bit overrated in being cited the second best PFP fighter on the planet? Ward just was able to step on the gas when he needed to, and made Kovalev look pretty mediocre for spells, in saying that I had it extremely level up to then and if anything had Kovalev ahead by one. I think in hindsight with the way it ended Ward was playing the patient game knowing he'd had reserves late on that his opponent probably didn't have. I think he was happy to let Kovalev burn himself out in the first half of the fight after the experience of their first bout.

One thing I do know about the Maywether v McGregor match, is that McGregor has more chance of winning a boxing match than Maywether would an MMA match.

Mayweather would be knocked out easily if he took even 1 shot from McGregor with the MMA style gloves they use, rather than the giant padded gloves they wear on their hands in boxing.

If Maywether gets to 50-0 then I think you have to look at all 50 fights to judge that record, rather than just say he got an easy 50th fight. How many actual world title fights did he have in comparison to Marciano's record?

I also think the boxing purists are massively underestimating McGregor here, anyone would think he's a complete novice boxer. McGregor isn't a wrestling specialist nor is he a black belt in Jujitsu(I think he's a brown belt). McGregor is a specialist at striking. So Maywether is taking on arguably the best pound for pound puncher in the UFC.

The big gloves will make it easier for Mayweather to dance around and avoid taking any big shots, but make no mistake McGregor hits as hard as any boxer his size, and can definitely withstand more of a beating than the opponents Mayweather has been used to.

He's still an elite level fighter, regardless of whether it is under boxing or MMA rules. Punching is punching at the end of the day. So I think people are really underestimating McGregor here.

I know Maywether will not be taking him lightly. As he's seen the damage McGregor can do if he lands cleanly on an opponent. That left hand of his can take anyone out in one shot.

Saying McGregor can't box would be abit like saying Faugheen, Istabraq and Big Bucks would have had no chance in an Ascot Gold Cup.

Mayweather 26 World Title fights , Marciano 7.

Mayweather wins this fight anyway he wants to.

Mayweather would never take an MMA fight.But he would have far more chance of winning a MMA fight than McGregor winning this.

I wont be watching. I think its a disgrace Mayweather is taking this fight.

If this is a genuine fight (and im not convinced) then I cant see how it can go past 3 rounds.

So it doesn't really matter who Mayweather fights to make it to 50, as he's proven himself more times at the highest level in those 50 fights than Marciano did. I think people need to look at the bigger picture rather than just the 50th fight.

Mayweather has no MMA training whatsoever. He would not have a hope in hell even against a rookie MMA fighter. You can't run and counter punch someone who is trying to take you down<laugh>

McGregor would pick Mayweather apart however he liked to in an MMA fight. It would be like watching a cat playing with a mouse.

Boxing is just a limited version of MMA. MMA fighters know how to punch, and know how to deal with someone punching them. A boxer would have no clue on how to deal with a take down or a kick or a knee to the head.
 
My point wasn't to compare Mayweather and Marciano that's ridiculous, my point was simply that it's a long standing boxing record is Marcianos 49-0 so to beat the record with a joke/gimmick/exhibition (delete as appropriate) fight takes the piss a little.
