Disagree that he made very few decent tunes, off the top of my head I can name dozens of classics in several genres that he recorded, Fame is brilliant though.
I prefer his early work, Alladin Sane,Hunky Dory, TMWSTW, Ziggy. Tons of crackers on them. Two of my personal favourites.
In my defence I was simply stereotyping, which isn't much of a defence but is entirely legitimate. Only funky music I had ever heard like that was all from black artists up until that point. Although now that I think about it blues brothers should've tipped me off. ****.
Van is great live except when he insists on playing sax which he clearly is average at, grade 5 at best. Someone should take him to one side and say, "Van look, it's ****".
At my works Xmas piss up they were all going on about black actors. I mentioned Sidney Pottier and this woman of fifty asked me if he was the guy from "Rising Damp".
