But we came back strongly against Peterborough, didn't we, and recovered strongly after Christmas after a poor spell, suggesting that your "bottle" remark is a bit irrelevant. Barcelona lost 1-2 tonight against The Filth, but they've shown admirable spirit over the last few seasons to win things. Losing a match doesn't mean a lack of "bottle". And you should expect that other posters express themselves in a frank and free spirit about you - many of us were brought up to tell the truth. If you don't like our comments getting on your tits, fasten the top button of your blouse.
Also how can "my" bottle comment be irrelevant? Its the title of the thread!!. Granted we usually we win the next game but again thats not what the thread is about

Dont think the team lacks bottle it was a close tough game .I do however think teams have more respect for us than they did before xmas and we are having to work harder for our points. Teams who get stuck into us do tend to be having success at the moment

Not sure its a lack of bottle, but we are certainly feeling the pressure and results are showing that. First game in a couple of years we have lost after going one up and you could see the worry and frustration starting to boil over. Still think we will do it by beating Coventry but would prefer leicester to do us a favour.

Southampton will go up in the Automatics in my opinion.

Even if they drop into the play-offs I can only see them winning it.

Good Luck next Season in the Prem, do yourselves proud !! <ok>

I wish I had your optimism! I'm sure we will get the necessary result against Coventry, but if we were to miss out and drop into the playoffs, I can't see us winning them at all.

Why would I want to shoot myself? The royals fan said he hoped we have bottle. Demonstrably after today we do not

I don't know why you think Saints had no bottle yesterday. Isn't another scenario that it's possible we just aren't quite as good as we think we are..? So, overall the the Lads have been playing out of their skin, all season - overachieving, in fact, because of the fantastic management by Adkins, Crosby and Co, and that occasionally we play as our true capability allows us..?

We were playing Middlesbrough AWAY yesterday remember, not at HOME, and this was their second chance against us, so they'd learned a few things. And still, we nearly did it. Southampton FC = a League One side only 12 months ago is actually going for it in the division above. Just because Norwich have already done it, and only last season, doesn't make the achievement any less amazing.

If we don't any make it to the PL this time, we have still done absolutely fantastically. There is absolutely no sense of the team losing bottle. Indeed, they've had a Melchizedek** of it throughout the season.

**30 litre bottle

Adkins was tactically outclassed yesterday it's happened a few times this season I'm afraid and I'm hoping he will improve this aspect of his management.Don't get me wrong I love the guy and he is my favourite manager of all time, but I've seen this before where our players aren't pressing up the pitch and putting pressure on the opposition,I don't know if Adkins tells the team which tactics to use and they don't implement them on the pitch or if he doesn't give them any different tactics to use.

Fair point

I hope you lot have got some.

Come up with us!

Now look what you have done, stirred up a hornets nest among our own negatives, they want it delivered on a plate, we all know it doesn't work like that when you are a Saints supporter! Good luck. I suspect you are better equipped to survive than us, but you are going to need some of that good fortune that has blessed you recently, am I jealous, too right mate!

I wish you had some optimism, it's your negativity that is at the root of the problem, you just don't have enough belief, and that tends to rub off.

Has anyone thought that if "bottle" is used to indicate courage, guts, true grit etc, why doesn't "to bottle" mean to apply that courage to a situation rather than the opposite? Regardless of this interesting semantic issue, may I second a good post on here a few days ago in which s.o. said that all Saints fans should be at St. Mary's without fail next Saturday to pay homage to a team and manager who have done us all more than proud this season, independently of whether we're promoted or not. Are we brave and honest enough for that?

It's rhyming slang (apologies if you know this), ie bottle and glass, @rse. So bottle is the ability to control one's sphincter in times of extreme stress, whereas to bottle it is to lose control of said muscle.

As to your other point, I expect about 16,000 people at St Mary's will share your sentiment. That's our core support, just about, and that's how many will still be grateful for this fantastic season regardless of the outcome. Many of the others, to be honest, weren't there in the bad times, so can't really be expected to fully appreciate the good. That's just my opinion, obviously.

LOL

For the avoidance of doubt, I wasn't suggesting the team lacks the guts to finish the job - merely expressing my wish that after a magnificent season you beat West Ham to the second auto spot.

Coventry are pretty dire but they're down and will be playing for pride. I reckon you'll do it but it would be nice if it happens tonight. I thought we'd blown the title Saturday with the draw (I don't see us beating Brum next weekend) but as you know, it's a funny old game.

Come on Leicester!

I'm quite expecting W'ham to beat the Foxes tonight and Hull on Saturday, and then I'll be hitting the bottle come Saturday afternoon. After the game, when we've beaten Coventry and can finally celebrate that long awaited return. Mind you, I'm not expecting to have any fingers left to hold the glass with.
