Jamie Carragher: “I think [Liverpool’s] system suited a lot of players in the team but none more than Steve McManaman,” Carragher said on Sky Sports as he analysed the Reds’ famous 4-3 win over Newcastle in 1996. “I think he was an out-of-this-world player in the Premier League at that time. I think four or five years on the bounce he was in the top five or six players, always going for Player of the Year, and if you wanted to stop Liverpool at this time, you had to stop Steve McManaman. “And the amount of times teams man-marked him because he had this free role.”
Look you can say whatever the hell you'd like, I saw the lad play a lot over the years, he was pretty much always hugging the touchline and trying to beat his man down it. Some teams given a winger more of a free role one side. You're welcome to bang on as much as you want here, that's my view and it won't be changing.
Why don't you two just nip over to the Liverpool board and start a polite poll to see what the consensus is from them?
Just about to request the same thing SD - does it really matter where McMannaman played? Sometimes through the middle, sometimes out wide - end of debate!
This would be rather fruitless because when it came out with Free Role ahead, Westlake would find some kind of loophole - the wording of the question, the fact that some people put winger - to continue to argue his point. It is somewhat muddied by the fact that he did sometimes play on the wing and that he would go out to the wings as part of his free role. I think all the quotes and references would constitute evidence enough of what he was best known for.
I mentioned McManaman in my post and Westlake had a problem with it, what should I have done? Just ignore him? Well exactly. It should really be that simple shouldn't it?
Haha well perhaps some may well say that sure! Interesting game etc. I just remember him mainly as a hug the touchline winger. Sure, he was quite capable of doing more and at times was moved off, but from memory certainly at Liverpool mainly the wing. England, always the wing. Man City, same. Real, I didn't see a lot of him there as never had sky - so not so sure about Real. Good player all the same. See what EH EH EH Calm down brigade come back with I guess.
I like your positivity Stretchy, and hope you are right! As always, football is so much about confidence, just look how we were 2nd to the ball every time once Brum had got the 2nd goal. Tough, exciting game, crowd right behind the team, a much deserved 2-1 home win....and we are off.
Westy, so the poll is a dead heat so far so this is clearly not the case, but neither is it the case that some people didn't regard him purely as a winger. I suppose we have to agree to disagree on this one, and to go back to my original point - if we are playing four in the midfield with no proper wingers then Edwards is the type of player I think would benefit from that kind of free attacking midfield role - covering the number 8 / 10 role that Gazza, Wark and Lampard played with the added bonus of being able to run at defenders and drift out to either wing as well like Sterling and McManaman.
Alright Yorkie fair. Gazza isn't that ( I'm joking do not worry no 2nd poll required !!!! ) Be interesting to see what Edwards could do in that position.
This is why you’re a moderator eh SD? Give Theresa May and Jean-Claude Juncker a buzz, after this Brexit will be a piece of cake.
There's really nothing to moderate here, it's handy having someone who can delete, merge etc though and I'm active enough to keep an eye on everything
