Keir Starmer led the CPS when it did not charge Jimmy Savile, but he wasn’t the reviewing lawyer What was claimed ~ Keir Starmer stopped Jimmy Savile being charged in 2009 Our verdict ~ Mr Starmer was head of the CPS when the decision was made not to prosecute Savile but he was not the reviewing lawyer for the case. An official investigation commissioned later by Starmer criticised both prosecutors and police for their handling of the allegations. https://fullfact.org/online/keir-starmer-prosecute-jimmy-savile/
He was the director of public prosecutions not somebody working for the DPP he was in charge. When this was signed off it would be in his name, if he failed to read the file or trusted the judgement of the person who carried out the review, it went out in his name because he was in charge, if he hasn't done either what exactly is the point of having a DPP at all, why not an office of barristers who make their own decisions without having a highly paid figurehead? Absolving him of blame would be like me refuting you if you said for instance that Teresa May wasn't responsible for cutting police numbers so severely that the clear up rate of house burglaries is at 3% and general crime is through the roof or Pritti Patel isn't responsible for the mess that is migrants crossing the English channel at huge dangers to themselves and families, they are in charge, it happened on their watch. The victims only would not support the police in the areas that they first reported these crimes and those forces did not act in the way that police officers actually investigating 'without fear and favour' and they had zero trust, that trust could easily have been gained by the use of specially trained police officers from other forces, with something as serious and as being an open secret for over 30 years, all avenues should have been explored, but it was easier to come up with the same outcome as before and that is shameful. As for the Boris radio remark, I don't know how many times I have to repeat this unlike 'some' I do not support any political party as I said earlier today out of the useless 650 mp's if I thought I can find 50 honest and not serving politicians I would be amazed, I think they are **** and especially Boris. I am not defending him over this what I am saying is very simple Boris has lied on multiple occasions that much is obvious but over this he is being asked to fall on his sword for the leader, that premise should apply to all leaders including those who were the DPP when he was the leader of that department, otherwise leaders will carry on to take the big buck and the knighthoods but never take the responsibility. As for the last paragraph, I think you forget that Rotherham was covered up a labour council and social workers and police officers who were ****ting themselves about being viewed as racist, that's why it went on at an industrial scale for around 20 years.
@BCFCRob I doubt very much that what Johnson actually said would fly in a court of law (and it's slander not libel) he said "he failed to prosecute Jimmy Saville" and where is the slander in that? Saville wasn't prosecuted by the CPS and organisation that he was the head of. Of course there is a raft of other high profile cases that he failed to properly act in including John Worboys the black cab rapist. His departments lack of action against Saville then allowed former labour deputy leader, the nonce finder general Tom Watson to accuse innocent men, one of whom died with these spurious allegations hanging over him and another to be bankrupted and all of them going through hell on having their names brought out in parliament and all on the evidence of fantasist, who in their excitement the Met not only lied to gain warrants and carry the raids on these peoples homes in full public glare but also failing to verify the evidence of the fantasist that would have cleared these wholly innocent men, whilst the DPP/CPS file about Saville only ever entered the public domain after his death, that's his legacy. I read somewhere that only 12% of CPS staff thought that under Starmer that CPS was well managed. He has questions to answer, as somebody said today, he talk all of the plaudits when the CPS did a good job and then threw them under the bus with "nothing to do with me guv" when they didn't.
A very awkward situation that highlights you can be head of an organization, and not have to be accountable. In KS he had " trained minions" doing the work on sifting the evidence. They do get a lot of cases, and in Bristol around 2005 -6 the CPS was just off the centre opposite the courts. there was a main office and office for final decisions! Such a high profile case, and it was a high profile case is unlikely not to have come to the attention of the "man at the top" Prior to 2013 KS ordered an investigation ............. Three of the victims told her that if they had received more information from the police at the time of the investigation—and particularly if each had been told she was not the only woman who had complained—they would “probably have been prepared to give evidence.” Ms Levitt said that, in the case of two of the allegations, there would have been a “realistic prospect of conviction” if the women had given evidence. “Having spoken to the victims I have been driven to conclude that had the police and prosecutors taken a different approach a prosecution might have been possible,” she wrote. Ms Levitt is critical of the approach taken by both the CPS’ reviewing lawyer and the police in failing to build a prosecution against Savile in 2009, but said there was no evidence of any “improper motive on the part of either police or prosecutors”. Imagine one of the most famous people renowned for everything he publicly did being accused at that time of crimes! And apparently no witnesses would come forward [ as thought they were only ones but there were 4!] Should it go to court [ forget after 2009 events, now talking 2009 ] and is found not guilty! All those responsible for getting him to court would have been ostracised beyond belief. Was there a LACK OF PRESSURE PUT ON not to follow it up... quietly let it go away, preserve their job and image. the damning statement is .... "if each had been told she was not the only woman who had complained—they would “probably have been prepared to give evidence.” Ms Levitt said that, in the case of two of the allegations, there would have been a “realistic prospect of conviction”" KS "DIDN'T HAVE A CLUE WHAT WAS GOING ON! but was in charge ..... BJ is in charge, and was fighting on three or more fronts at the same [ KS sat in his office signing off paperwork! ] and has apologised for those things he freely admitted to ....! the similarity is very tentative, and amazingly all the paperwork presented to the CPS has been destroyed .... justice was served, albeit he died, but how many unknown cases are there besides those known that after 2009 suffered because of the lack of action ... the all encompassing all round lack of action!
Todays quiz:- Who said “leaders should carry the can”? who was the the leader of the CPS when they failed to prosecute Saville.
Exactly true and I wouldn’t buy a used car from any of them, Boris is Boycie and Starmer is Swiss Tony.
I know he was DPP, I said it in my post. I think this Tweet sums it up perfectly: "It is the equivalent of accusing David Cameron of having ordered the Bloody Sunday shootings and, when challenged on it being a lie, replying "well, it's a matter of record that he apologised for what happened while he was in charge". " Blaming Starmer is just being desperate. And I think you've watched far too much nonsense Tommy Robinson material to keep bringing up Rotherham, and seemingly nothing else. My fault, absolutely correct. I do actually agree with you in criticising him as DPP, there are clear examples as you say, I just completely disagree on this one. I don't think he did much (if anything) wrong when it comes to Savile. And it's a deliberate and desperate attempt to smear him, knowing that people will react particularly emotionally over that nonce.
Hey ho now caught up with things in the peace and quiet of the wee small hours. PMQ's... ho ho ho ... Speaker with his prepared speech, laid out confirmation of some ground rules.. rightly so. No other party confirmed congratulations of HM's 70 years as our monarch .. a usual historical start to their parties Q's [ to intent on keeping up the attack on BORIS! ] Smarmy, thats how he came over, makes a comment he thinks is funny and turns to his bench's as if to confirm he wish's them to heckle / laugh with a grin like a cheshire cat ..... Boris has had lots of practice answering his regular and now boring questions, and I thought in all 6 cases he wiped the smile off .... Lawyer not Leader, he has been tagged as and looks to not very good at either at the mo. It will be a much much better place for us all to live in when the opposition realises that the cost of £408bn .. so far ! to counter COVID does somewhat tie the hands of .GOV. Fearing for the future, the smarmy KS, started an attack on RISHI ! a like adversary should Boris step down! There was classic lesson of Labour finance attitude, and why they [ as we were reminded by 1 retort "no money left!] left a massive black hole when they lost the election. Even the not very good minded people, not that good at maths can understand the thinking behind the "family tax credit thing" [ TC] it is so so simple ... person A earns good wage BUT qualifies for TC. their personal allowances means they pay tax 20 & 25% whatever is the rates on £X Person B with tax credits does not have as much income so pays tax at 20% / and a liitle at 25% Person C does not have as much income and pays at 20% / none at 25% so how do you give them more in their pockets to make it fairer! ? so so simple, you get the lowest earners to have less tax to pay. How do you do that and we should all know, higher personal allowance = an incerease in income, a levelling out of peoples lives and wellfare without taking away the ability to get a job and income to supply what you want. for those with doubts about how it works.. an example not based on factual figures....... C has INCOME all sources is £14, 000 PERSONAL ALLOWANCE is £11,000 tax on First £2000 is 20% and 25% for all above. = tax paid = £400 + £250 = total £650 [ about £12-13 pw ] B has INCOME all sources is £14, 800 PERSONAL ALLOWANCE is £11,000 tax on First £2000 is 20% and 25% for all above. = tax paid = £400 + £450 = total £850 [ about £16 pw ] so make the personal allowance £12, 400 C NOW ONLY PAYS TAX @ 20% on first £1600 [ £310 ] so saves £340 per annum B now only pays TAX @ 20% on first £ 2000 + tax on £400 @ 25% so saves about the same [ doing maths in my head so hopefully figures work ] A probably does not qualify ....... KS wants the tax credit to be more per week [ and thats why when in power the labour always end with massive debts they only have one train of thought!!! ] they also want to close the gap between higher and lower wage differences! WELL KS ..news just in for you, it cannot be done your way, sounds good to the gullible public .. give them more ... maybe you should go back to a job you are good at... [ wont be a leader or a lawyer though! ]
Agree to disagree, as I said he has always claimed that 'leaders should carry the can', that is exactly what he expects Johnson to do, he was the DPP the 'leader' of the CPS when this decision was made and he pushed the blame on to others in his department and especially the police and he did exactly the same over his departments failure to prosecute the Rochdale grooming gang and even tried to persuade the Manchester CPS office and the GMP police to back off, leaving hundreds of vulnerable females to further abuse for at least 5 years. The irony is he apologised for the shortcomings of both of these debacles from his department, Johnson has apologised albeit a pretty shabby apology but an apology akin to the shabby Starmer DPP apology. I'm sorry the bloke is a grade one British standard hypocrite, do as I say not as I do. He cannot have it both ways either he was the leader or he was just on an ego trip taking the money and the knighthood. And for clarity Johnson is a lying twat, being manipulated by his 3rd wife an unelected chancer.
Sorry, cant agree all the evidence trails have been destroyed so no info as to what was said or done is available ... such a high profile case would almost certainly need to be passed to highest level for comment. Imagine should all the photo's of NO 10 go missing or get destroyed ... what then!!!! What happens when the the only bit of evidence, say a blood stained knife, with perps and victims blood goes walkies ..... ? There will always be doubts about KS v JS
I disagree Both those characters, albeit dodgy, are actually likeable. Also, if you don't want to buy a car from them you can simply walk away. We can't walk away from Johnson's rules - he's the government!!
You’re a typical sun reader, falling for all the Childish names and phrases. What are they WOMBLE, lawyer not leader , captain hindsight, any more inane names or slogans? I’m sure I’ve missed a few. Think for yourself ffs.
From the Tory-loving Daily Fail: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...hop-Trump-Jimmy-Savile-slur-Keir-Starmer.html If this paper turns on him then BJ really does have few friends left
Boris wouldn’t be backing down if it was true anyways. If it really was true he’d have no problem about saying it publically. If he lies then he could be susceptible to legal action. The reason he won’t say it is true is because it’s not.
NOT A SUN reader.. unless on Spaceweather.com... You are starting to sound like Keir Starmer & Ian Blackford ... repeat repeat repeat ...... What do you think about the " ASH DIE BACK PROBLEM"
He is backing down for one simple reason and that is to head off the triggering of a vote of no confidence. Legal action although messy would IMHO fail because what he said was true.
there was a GE in 2010 after 13 years of Labour gov when bank base rate had been high as 7.5% when we had £tr's of oil revenue and sold our £bn's of gold reserves. With massive debts and high inflation bank of ENGLAND HAD NO CHOICE TO SLASH INTEREST RATES to level it is today! almost 12 years later
