I used to enjoy mild in the 80s every now and again and also a pint of "mixed". Any old town pubs do a pint of mixed? I'm up on Tuesday afternoon/evening for the Brighton game and a pint of mixed would be a real throwback.
Thanks JE. Starting off in Ye Olde White Harte at 4pm and planning Black Boy visit so Blue Bell is nearby. A few OPs in YOWH followed by a pint of mixed in Blue Bell, a swift one in Black Boy and then off for a curry at Tandoor Mahal.... Had a good chat with the Black Boy landlord/manager in October about its history etc. A lot i didn't know.
Couple of pints of Timothy Taylor in Crown and Anchor at Tickton at lunchtime, and a couple of glasses of Moët tonight. Mrs Tash bought me a bottle of Laphroiag Quarter Cask for V Day. Not opened it yet, but looking forward to it.
Yeah its surprising what you find out. Apparently they smuggled the slaves in their via a tunnel from the river i found out last year,, hence the name
It's an urban myth, they're just drainage tunnels, they're actually too narrow for a person to fit down.
The Black Boy pub probably had nothing at all to do with slaves Went swimming this morning and had a long sauna session. Nothing like a bit of dehydration for getting pissed on **** all. Finished the Hobgolin, then had a very nice Belgium abbey 10% , a couple of glasses of Castillo real clasica tempranillo and just opened a Banks's Bitter. Long day, with a big family dinner capped a good weekend.
Champion 20 year old port for me tonight, after an 'uge steak and proper home cooked chips at the city's best pub 2015 in the restaurant awards. Which city isn't part of this unless my agent has sorted image rights... I don't just come to football to spectate. I learn. Washed down with a very classy Pinot noir. Made even better for the fact I have been crippled with a fever and the worst headache ever for two solid days. The doc said I had a temperature but I had money on brain tumour. I am not good with illness. Joking apart, it was that bad. Needless to say the port has almost certainly increased the chance of me having a headache again tomorrow. At least this time I won't be under six blankets weeping, and demanding anyone who comes near me to check my forehead and feel how hot it is. You need a bit of sympathy. As for the Malbec, try catena or hey Malbec at majestic.
Current landlord said the sign was to do with being a tobacconist, the "black boy" in question being (I think) from Central America rather than Africa which represented the sale of baccy.
Just before emigrating in 1975, I went on a crawl of the old town pubs and then repeated it in 79 with my new wife. That was my last visit to Hull ... hoping to come home soon.
Introduced to the ales in Walter's Bar and Wm Hawkes yesterday (plus a return to Ye Olde White Harte and Black Boy). So many ales to choose from! Curry at Tandoor Mahal was great, thanks to posters for the suggestion.
