Soon after this recording was made in 1954 I had my last fight. Made it to the final of the Hull area Army Cadets championships but lasted only for the first punch thrown by my opponent which knocked me down and the ref stopped the fight!
It's sad that such an historic sport such as boxing should have so many 'stigma's' attached to it. The 'shady' background that has developed over the years, mis-management of fighters and glaring mis-matches. There is also the 'rags to riches' attraction but this happens only to a select few. Floyd Mayweather has made millions out of the game whilst many others have fallen by the wayside. Some have come through unscathed and made some sort of living for themselves whilst others suffer from the dreaded 'punch drunk' syndrome. Someone once asked the 'Great Depression' Heavyweight Champion, Jack Dempsey, why he got into the game and he replied "Only when you haven't eaten for two days would you understand"! I guess the day of the 'hungry fighter' has gone. the Great British Champion Sir Henry Cooper stated that he fought the "Greatest", Muhammad Ali, for a purse of 80,000 pounds yet, after tax and expenses, received a mere 14,000. It's something that gets into your blood. Have a look at the prospects learning their trade in St Pauls. They are all chasing their dreams - "And lovin' it"! Thoughts are with Blackwell at the moment.
Do keep up, he's been out since Saturday. Not that I would expect someone like you to know that. TWT.
Lucky boy; just read that he's suffered a ''skull bleed'' and not a brain bleed as initially suspected.
That's a decent gesture. If I was Blackwell - I'd hang up my gloves now. I think Eubank Jr looks a far better fighter than his Dad. His punches are ferocious. The last fella he beat he smashed him around the ring too.
Doesn't seem to have that killer KO blow though for me, but that could be down to the person taking the punches, rather than anything lacking with Eubank
Nigel Benn's lad looks a bit of a nutter, he's on the undercard for the Joshua fight on Saturday... http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/boxing/35990231
Nigel Benn was a tremendous fighter. Or rather, a fighter involved in tremendous fights. He was always compelling viewing.
