To me it's not about removing history but educating people on our past. For example, I don't think we should have standalone statues but instead, they should be in museums. There we can ensure that people are properly educated about the atrocities they committed, and hopefully learn from it.

I genuinely believe we should learn about slavery, our actions in India/Pakistan, and the Sykes-Piquot line, for example.

Not to 'brainwash' children but to educate them on past mistakes and to demonstrate how far we've come since then. Educating people is what's important, imho.

What we need is “education”. Education, over time, is what will solve the problems that do exist. It will take time and probably a lot of time over generations but it is the only guaranteed way to solve the problems.

Racism does exist in this country. It’s debatable as to how bad bad is but regardless it does need to be addressed and can’t be allowed to continue. How is the $64M question and there is no easy answer or solution. We need to do something but committing criminal acts for me is not the way and never will be.

We need to educate the old, the middle aged and the young, we need to be tolerant and understanding but we need to listen as well. It won’t be solved overnight but the first step is to acknowledge a problem exists and then talk about how to solve it and reach a way forward which so far as possible respects all persons position and values.

We should also attempt to avoid judging historical persons by today’s standards but judge them by standards which were prevalent in their time.

 

I thought Earl Grey was fairly important in the abolition of slavery? I thought that was why all the protests demonstrations against what is seen as facism/oppression started at the Monument?

Hopefully that won't be happening, I've always loved the Monument and how its situated. I like statues and the stories behind them. I like history.

It pains me to say it but I think ACS nailed it earlier . I don't see how removing these statues achieves anything? Indeed by being there it encourages people to learn the full story of these people, warts and all. We have to accept they were operating in a different time, so some of their deeds will have crossed certain boundaries, racial and otherwise. Too often we are trying to apply todays standards to different times, I find it bizarre at best.

We need to be very careful here, because most of history is tainted in some way. I mean we could start with the world wars, the recent wars. They are hardly clean as a whistle. So do we do away with anything associated with those? Nelson Mandela has a statue in London. Should that be taken down with a view to the violence he was involved in because that should be abhorrent to anyone as a means of getting your point across.

I am not in favour of tearing up society as it stands today, to try and remodel it in a new vision people have. We can achieve what we need to through education, and only education. Until the people making the laws and policies are educated properly about race etc, nothing is achieved by this as far as I can see. Indeed I think it hinders the movement to try and sweep things under the carpet. The Germans didn't completely remove the Wall when they took it down. They left sections to serve as a reminder.

 

And when are the Romans going to apologise for enslaving all of us the bastards!

Slavery was the norm throughout history for a long time. There is no doubt the British excelled at it, but being good at it doesn't mean we should get more **** than the rest of the world.

Its weird though too, people don't seem to be so outraged about the slavery taking place right now in Africa (or elsewhere in the world). The likes of Liberia, Sierra Leone, etc all have ongoing slavery via diamond mines etc. More than half a million people are enslaved (forced labour). So yeah black lives do ****ing matter, and how's about giving a **** about the ones suffering right now at the hands of countries all round the world, from all different races. Its not just a black/white thing, its a human thing. Evil humans do evil things.

I just find it funny logic that people are getting so worked up about a few ****ing statues, when there is actual real time **** happening that should surely take precedence.
