There's players changing hands for £15m willy nilly nowadays, like £15m is nothing.

Jordan Rhodes price is near enough £15m that's just ridiculous, a guy who's never kicked a ball in the top flight for the same price as two Andy Cole's.

I don't think the first £100m player will neccaserrily be one of the best players in the world at that time.
The way things are going £100m will be common throughout the elite clubs soon enough.

When you look at it like that, it's a mental business. Ok there's a lot more money in the game now but it's bonkers.

Maybe the value should should be set in alliance with the last contract signed and the accepted contract on the pending transfer

For example, lets use a player who is taking a step up.

If player A singed a 5 year contract at 25kpw that would give him a contract value of 6.5m. The terms agreed on his new contract in his proposed transfer is a 5 year contract at 55k a week, the value of his contract is 14.3m

The Mean(average) of the two contract value's is £10.4m and there you have your fee.

But if the buying club are lets say man city and they want to take the piss and give player A 120kpw on a 5 year contract. it would set the contract value at 31.2m, the mean of 6.5m and 31.2m would set the transfer at 18.8m. The player now has to think about if the move doesn't work out and they have to step back down, they've just raised the future transfer on the next transfer to an unrealistic value. It would make players think about their career as a whole and not the next big pay day. It will also lead to players getting their most lucrative contracts at the back end of their career and not in their early to mid 20s, like it used to be.

It's a formula that makes the club player and agent think a bit more about terms and demands of contracts.

Could that work? It will certainly make Agents think about how they advise their clients, Because all of the sudden the club offering the most wages can become less attractive because it can significantly effect their next transfer and the rest of the his career. Suddenly greed will be punished and agents, players and clubs will have to think a bit more about what the player is actually worth rather than just engineer a move to the highest payer.

    Hope that makes sense. :p

Should there not be something like a tranfer fee cap?

    Errm, no.

If we don't win this match this board will be full of hell, end of.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not disrespecting Birmingham, it's just Gus likes a good Cup run, so I expect more or less the same team line up tonight.

    GUS :-

“We will certainly be trying to have another good run. Normally, it’s one (final) every 20-plus years, so to do two in a row, you're asking a lot! But we will try.”

Tonight's game against Birmingham is one that Sunderland should win, which could set them off on another run. Poyet said: “Last year, in the beginning, we had some nice draws at home, but every game can be difficult.

“I used one game against Southampton to try something different. Then we beat Chelsea in extra-time and we were in the semi-finals, and when you're there, you take your chances.”

He insisted that he wouldn't be taking the game lightly though, and would be playing a strong team in order to progress to the next round.

He insisted: “There are not going to be too many changes. There will be a few because there are players that need to play.

“There's going to be three or four (changes), but I'm not going to take it lightly and make 11 changes or change the system.

SUMMER SIGNINGS Jordi Gomez, Costel Pantilimon and Billy Jones are all expected to make their first Sunderland starts in tonight’s Capital One Cup clash at Birmingham City.

But Sunderland boss Gus Poyet has vowed to limit his tinkering after seeing the value of the competition in last season’s march to the final.

Midfielder Gomez has appeared in both of Sunderland’s two opening outings from the bench, while fellow Bosman arrivals Pantilimon and fit-again Jones are yet to make their Black Cats bows.

All will be handed an opportunity at St Andrews’s, with midfielder Liam Bridcutt also pencilled in to be included, probably at the expense of Lee Cattermole.

Poyet realises his fringe players need to feature against Championship outfit Birmingham, with Valentin Roberge, Jozy Altidore and Charis Mavrias all potentially involved too.

But the head coach is mindful of fielding a strong enough side for Sunderland to progress after the Black Cats’ run to Wembley last season produced a dramatic upturn in their Premier League fortunes.

“Last year, it was a mix of things in the beginning - nice draws at home, I used one game in particular to try something different against Southampton,” said Poyet.

“Then we beat Chelsea in extra-time and the next thing we knew, we were in the finals.

“When you get there, you take your chances.

“I can promise you there won’t be too many changes. There will be a few.

“There are players who need to play - Jordi Gomez deserves to play, I need to play Pantilimon to keep the competition between the goalkeepers as well.

“Billy Jones is back from injury and needs to play.

“There will be a few changes, but I’m not going to take it lightly or make 11 changes or change the system.

“The cup is a good thing. They’re like individual finals and you need to win all the time to get through.

“It brings a good feeling to the team.

“It’s a small celebration that you have if you get through.”

After successive draws in Sunderland’s opening two games, Poyet is also keen to register a first win of the campaign.

The Uruguayan believes smooth progress to the third round would offer a timely confidence boost ahead of Saturday’s trip to a newly-promoted QPR side who are yet to register a point.

“I want to get back to winning ways, so we can get that feeling and go into Saturday with a winning mentality,” he added.

“It’s not the same kind of draw this year because last season we were at home practically all the time.

“It’s going to be tough and a great challenge for Birmingham as well.”

Gus Poyet looks ahead to this evening's game.
Sunderland begin their 2014-15 Capital One Cup campaign at St Andrew’s against Birmingham City tonight.
The Black Cats will be looking to once again progress in the competition after losing 3-1 to Manchester City in last year’s final, following an incredible journey to Wembley that included victories over Manchester United and Chelsea.
Speaking ahead of Wednesday's match Gus Poyet admitted the match will be a tough one.
“It is going to be very difficult and very demanding,” he said. “We need to make sure we understand the phases of play – we need to cope with their game, their strengths and how they play, and then put our style into play as much as possible to control the game.
“There are going to be a few changes because we need to make sure that we use the players wisely, we are playing Sunday, Wednesday and Saturday and it is a very short period of time with the possibility of playing extra time.”
He continued: “We need to make sure we pick the right players who can play for the majority of the game, it is not an experiment and we will not try something silly or not look after the cup.
“We are trying to maintain a strong core to the team whilst paying attention to the small issues you have after playing a game like we did on Sunday against Manchester United.”
Those changes could include the inclusion of Billy Jones, who is in line to make his debut after returning from injury as an unused substitute against Manchester United.
Meanwhile Jordi Gomez could make his first competitive start for the club, after featuring as a substitute in the Black Cats’ opening fixtures against West Bromwich Albion and the Red Devils.
Lee Clark will be without Matt Green and Gavin Gunning who are both unavailable due to knee injuries, with Andrew Shinnie also out due to a back problem.
The only meeting between the two sides in the Capital One Cup ended in a Sunderland win, as goals from Jordan Henderson and Frazier Campbell secured a 2-0 victory in September 2009.
However, Poyet’s side will have to be at their best against a City side who rarely lose at home in the cup, with the Blues losing just once in their last 11 league cup games at St Andrew’s.
Birmingham now play their football in the Championship, suffering relegation from the Barclays Premier League just months after lifting the League Cup following a dramatic 2-1 win over Arsenal.
And they began their current Capital One Cup campaign with a comfortable win, defeating League Two side Cambridge United 3-1.
Tonight's match will kick off at 7.45pm, with full match coverage and reaction available via safc.com and on Twitter by following @SunderlandAFC.

Even if we play half decent with a strong squad we may not get the rub of the green and are more than capable of losing this game!

No, you're definitely getting ahead of yourself mate. Even when the odds are heavily in your favour you should never presume the outcome.

I'll be hoping for a strong performance, a good result tonight, and later, an easy home tie in the next round.

All fees are dependent on how much the club needs/wants the player really, I don't think for one second that if Adam Lallana is worth £25m then Toni Kroos is worth £20m, it's ridiculous. Lallana isn't fit to pick the dog s**t out of Kroos' winter mouldies.

It all depends on how much the team wants the player, you've seen that with this Boringi transfer this summer, nobody values him at £14m but Sunderland want him so they are prepared to pay it.

My issue is with teams like City who think it's fair to hoover up all the promising talent and make them sit on the bench and play in their reserves because they don't immediately turn out as good as Yaya Toure or Sergio Aguero, then the players leave after spending a year or two under poor coaches non-the-wiser and their development came to a firm halt.

35 years ago I started at the Child Benefit Centre in Washington on £18 a week.

It's hard to compare then and now!

It's crazy, crazy money. How long can football sustain this - Is it a bubble waiting to burst? Maybe not for those already at the very top of the game, globally.....but for those trying to get there....

As long as people as paying for Sky, then the bubble won't burst. For normality to kick in, a majority of fans would have to cancel Sky...but that ain't happening

Like I've already said, I'm not disrespecting Brum in any way, I'm not taking a 'win' for granted either.

I'm simply basing my expectations on everything we are all discussing on this forum, namely the final links to our jigsaw (our final squad), ie, we are not far away from being very happy with our lot, but as it stands, imo, we are still stronger than Brum especially when Gus has indicated that although he won't take this match lightly, he wants another Cup run.

I know for a fact that this match will not be a 'Cake Walk' however, I do know for a fact that if we don't win, there will be hell going on on this forum.

Despite how tough this encounter is going to be.....We expect !
