IMHO he’s nowhere near delivering the impact that those players I mentioned were. Over time I may be proved wrong - I hope I am.
Statistically a goal kick played long will heavily favour the opposition, the ball will be contested, it is not a fifty fifty ball, ball retention can be extremely low. This will be hundreds of defensive actions the team will have to perform a season. Hundreds of defensive actions that teams choose to avoid by playing through the first third consistently. Statistically a goal kick played short .. Well its not contested, there has to be less defending and more opportunity from secure possession.
DISAGREE sorry.. but it is a case of how accurate the kick up the field is..... If you have a couple players on the left one on the right and one in their half of centre circle would be silly to kick it to the right unless he didnt have a marker within 25-30m ish. Liklihood is ball aerial bound so could need heading? You also have to be aware the goalie is kicking either from fixed or from save .. if a save then you are likely [ should have ] at least 3 4 5? players up field and a similar number of defenders? The onus has to be on accuracy for a goal kick 2 players in the centre circle and ball incoming = 50 50 [ but winning it needs to have someone to pass it to or able to get past the other player........ if his players get up the pitch then better targets for him [goalie ]to kick to...
I get the above. What seems to happen is we get closed down and we launch it anyway. Tbf Dickie does try to 'bring it out'. I watched the last game on Millwall TV. The commentators were poking fun endlessly at Vyner, Tanner and Dickie passing to each other going nowhere only for Vyner to attempt his Hollywood diagonal that found touch. It hasn’t taken long for Manningball to be sussed by other teams. Basically I'm not sure we have the player quality to play his system.
Yes there is the option of launching it anyway, but its not the sole option. Possession football in the first third increases possession to be positive, negative, adept and unskilled, a means to varying ends. Yes you will disagree but it does not alter what is a fact. Passing length decreases accuracy and retention of the football, and this applies to a great player like an Ederson, or a decent pro like Fielding.
Yes. Playing possession football in the first third increases opportunity in the second and third third. The outcomes there can differ, and be opposites but the reason teams play out from possession is to create more opportunity. It was a simple parallel. Using a player noted for his distribution and a ex Bristol City competent pro. Both players passing accuracy diminishes when passing a ball over length. Fieldings ability saw a very large drop off, hence Bristol City used a variant where the team would set up lopsided and if the ball was over hit, the team did not have to defend it out of shape.
Morning Clifton, 'outcomes', 'opposites', 'possession','opportunity ' etc etc. Has anyone factored in the goals and guilt edged chances that occur from what I call 'piss balling about at the back'. Just watched the start of the Watford cup tie, they should have been 2 up before Chesterfield scored in the 4th minute......solely down by Chesterfield getting caught out dithering playing tippy tappy rubbish. Every weekend goals are scored across all leagues by mind numbing and ridiculous messing about going nowhere at the back. Pep ball, or Manning's and other copycat versions, is killing football as a spectacle and fan enjoyment. Well, it is for me anyway.
Like Man City you mean. Sunderland yesterday were another of many clubs wishing they'd never heard of Pep ball. Trying to play in his own box got what the idiot deserved.
Yes. And clubs factor in what occurred from piss balling lamping it up the park. Everything in modern football is factored and measured, there is some short bloke out there who measures the grass.
