Alex Morgan, NFL, Bale ......how does the Amazon Stadium sound , I'm sure we could help Jeff Bezos spunk a few billion
Just imagine how many of those stunning moments were not captured on film. Those of you that were regulars at the Lane at the time, what's the best goal you remember that wasn't filmed?
I remember a Hoddle chip from outside the box in a FA youth cup game and me and my old man just embraced and jumped up and down , that was the one and only time my old man let himself go that I can remember, not sure of the opponents but that is one of my best Spurs memories
Since Spurs were promoted back to Div 1 in 1978, probably nearly every goal scored was recorded by someone or other (whether all that footage is in the public domain is another story) .
Being recorded does not mean they were shown on broadcast TV on the actual day (if at all) . Quite interested now as to when all goals for a match week started to be shown on broadcast TV.
I think that ITV were showing all the goals before the premier league started. It may have been after the TV blackout that saw no football televised at the start of the season 85/86 I think it was and when the deal was agreed I think that all goals were available- I recall that we had a video that showed all the goals scored in the matches that took place whilst there was no televised football. I think around this time you could also start to get videos at the end of the season of all of a clubs goals I certainly recall having this one
I could not remember whether Football focus / Saint and Greavsie etc were showing goal highlights of those games that were not screened during Motd / The big match the previous weekend. My original comment was due to the fact that I think regional TV would often have highlights of games that were not broadcast nationally. I recall an FA cup tie at OT that Spurs won (Ardiles goal - first time in aeons that Spurs had won there in any competition) , and twas several years later I actually saw footage of the goal.
The first live league match was October 1983 between Spurs & Notts Forest & Spurs won 2-1. They made a tv ad for this momentous occasion (live league footie) which I, along with my son & daughter were in! It was good fun, we were part of the crowd scene as the players had to run out of the tunnel about ten times. We had to twirl our rattles & shout & cheer. We were only in a small section of the enclosure but on screen it looked full. I remember Glen Hoddle, Steve Archibald, & Falco but memory has gone a bit hazy for the rest! Anyway, it was a great honour for our ground & our match to be selected as first for this historic occasion. Mind you, we were still the bees knees as we had won the FA Cup the last 2 years running! Sigh, sigh.....
I had meant to say that I think all results were shown from from that date. Always get a bit carried away when reminiscing
I've heard a lot of people say that you can't blame the officials for giving the Newcastle penalty. Oh but those officials have a lot to answer for. From the free kick that led to it that simply wasn't to the two incidents of handballs in the Newcastle area that we did not get a penalty from. It's not just a mad rule but it's not even applied consistently, and that's at least as damaging as the stupidity of the rule. This means that (old chestnut warning) certain teams will benefit from it and others will lose out, and at the end of the season these decisions won't even themselves out, but will have a major impact on the league table. Let's consider what happens if these decisions go against other teams, let's say for example they play in red. Firstly I don't believe the penalty is given. And the pundits will agree. Supportive comments will say stuff like "it's a good thing common sense is being applied to this rule" or "yes his arms are away from his body but you can't jump without doing that". Some may even refer to the complete accidental nature of it, such as the player looking in the other direction! (Even though it appears accidental is no longer a thing.) Secondly in the very unlikely event the penalty is given the outcry would be massive. Far more than it has been for any decision so far. Everything you've heard about ruining football would be repeated but on a scale that dwarfs the current displeasure. The officials would be destroyed. There would be calls to demote them, calls for an immediate rule change etc. Basically it's no wonder the officials play it safe. Either consciously or subconsciously they know which decisions will give them the least grief - and in that you can't blame them (sort of). But whoever is playing there needs to be a discussion about this. The "accidental" thing needs to be brought back and the "natural position" debate needs reminding that having your arms out when jumping is natural, or we'll end up with a penalty box full of players looking like they're doing the pogo at a late 70s punk concert.
Yep, Pool for example have played 3 games in the PL so far this season, and enjoyed beneficial refereeing in all of them, which has almost certainly trousered them extra points. Dodgy penalty decisions given for and not given against v Leeds, the changing of a yellow card to a red v Roman FC (this decision would not have been changed if the boot was on the other foot) and the ignoring of a red card elbow and a hand ball when scoring a goal v Woolwich. However, this is nothing new and has been going on for years.
Have to applaud Jose...he’s been behind the badge since day 1 and fights the cause. He says the things we all bemoan and have been bemoaning for years.
