IIRC he started off further forward then got had a growth spurt and moved a bit deeper into more of a CM role for England at least. That always looked his best position but we never used him there, perhaps because he was still a bit lightweight for senior football in that position. Be great to see more of him now.
I call it Yaya Toure Syndrome Any big, athletic, black midfielder has to be forced into deeper positions, as they can't play a role like Eriksen, for some unknown reason. I have no idea why managers seem to believe this is the case, but I can't help noticing it happen repeatedly.
There could perhaps be an angle there. To be fair, he was also really damn good in the deeper role for the youth teams and I think they’d started playing 433 at England level anyway so it’s not like there was a 10 role for him to play anyway.
Racial bias pure and simple....exactly like this https://www.independent.co.uk/sport...racial-bias-study-pfa-runrepeat-a9592276.html
So we just remove adjectives from the language then? Match commentaries would end up like those from the radio many years ago. Smith passes to Jones who crosses to Green who heads the ball in!!! Hardly constructive. Clubs use players in roles which fit their abilities in size, speed and skill. For instance, could Sissoko really play an Eriksen role? Club management also see the whole range of a player's abilities in training and select accordingly. Back to the topic of Onomah. I had seen him playing on loan for other clubs at Cardiff on a few occasions and was not impressed. Lightweight, didn't seem to know his role. Now seen him 3 times for Fulham v Cardiff over a 3 week period. Albeit on TV not at the ground. He seems a different player. He has the ability to ghost around the park, lose any marker and arrive in the box at crucial times. Scoring twice v Cardiff. Perhaps he has found a club, manager and style that suits him. Was MoM in my view in the first 2 games.
That's the point though, Blue: Onomah is not Sissoko, but he somehow ends up being used in a similar role to him. We all know that Sissoko is a powerful athlete with a great engine and limited skill levels. He's fantastic at breaking up play, covering other players and driving runs into space, but he's useless near the opposition's box and has a terrible first touch. Onomah, on the other hand, has a completely different set of abilities and shouldn't be used in the same way. He's good on the ball, picks a pass well, is dangerous in the attack and has very good movement. One of these players is suited to playing an advanced role, while the other is far better in a deeper one. Why did one of them end up playing a lot of football out of position?
Not dismissing the racial aspect of this at all, but I would say that Sissoko and Onomah are being used in the right position (deeper midfielder), but one is just far better at it than the other. Different types of player - Sissoko is a fantastic athlete with technical deficiencies, Onomah has developed as an athlete but also developed the technical and positional acumen he had as a youngster playing a more advanced role, which makes him all the more effective in a deeper role. I’m sure he could play as a 10 as well but clearly Scott Parker thinks he can make more use of his all round skills in a different position. I don’t think this is a case of a player being racially profiled, though that certainly happens both on the pitch and in the commentary box, and cannot be dismissed.

End of the world no ,but we are getting there , Trump and Cummins are still in charge and I've heard that the BBC have given the go ahead for a new series of Mrs Brown's Boys
I just accidentally turned the TV over from Apocalypse Now to Mrs Browns boys...........The Horror The Horror
Thanks a bunch, I had almost erased that horror show from my memory, one mate got jumped in a bar in Cardiff, another got his pocket dipped and when we got back to the hotel my room was leaking water from the pissed up idiot in the room above who had fallen asleep in the shower
