The thing with Clive James is he was expecting to die three years ago, and that's when he said his farewells and the tributes started, and even he said he was starting to feel embarrassed at outliving his diagnosis by a considerable time
I loved Clive James writing and can wholeheartedly recommend his Unreliable Memoirs as being laugh out loud funny. RIP, sir.
The discussion of the use of the word "uppity" is a reminder of how you have to be so careful about choosing the right word/phrase to ensure offence isn't caused. This is the legacy of political correctness - ordinary words/phrases can become socially unacceptable because of the way people choose to view them. Look at mental illness. Medical terms become unacceptable because of their connotations. So they are replaced by other terms, which, over time suffer the same fate. Lunatic, moron, imbecile, mentally retarded. How long before intellectually disabled is offensive? And there will always be people who don't quite keep up with the game who are demonised, even criminalised, as a result.
The Athletic's published their Spurs XI of the decade Lloris; Walker, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Rose; Modric, Dembele; Son, Eriksen, Bale; Kane In other words, The Athletic once again demonstrate that they're a bunch of clueless Yanks who haven't paid any attention to football until four years ago, which is the only explanation for why Eriksen is picked ahead of VDV - and that's avoiding the agony of trying who to leave out from Ledders, Toby and Verts...
The latest public use of uppity? Boris Johnson slagging off single mothers and Nigerians. It's almost as if there's some sort of theme, isn't it?
It's so much easier when there's less ambiguity when somebody makes a comments with racial undertones, for example the wrestling commentator who got sacked last week for saying one wrestler was so tough he could ride a moped across Ethiopia with a bucket of fried chicken on his back and not lose a single piece ...which also reminded me of this
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/50581762 The BBC will broadcast every 2019 Fifa Club World Cup match live from Qatar this December. Good use of my license money. Who cares about this tournament apart from Liverpool fans and Qatar- which answers the question as to why it is being broadcast.
It's almost worth watching the Monterrey vs (presumably) Al-Sadd match to see in which minute the commentators mention any of the 22 players who are actually on the pitch
That's me gone. For anyone who hasn't been yet....just go. It really is fabulous. I just wish my old man had made it.
Reminds me of how quickly I've become used to the new ground. Great to see somebody really appreciating the place and having that first time feeling. Superb timing too, coming out to the Champions League music and everyone chanting Come On You Spurs!
Sergei Rebrov. I am still not sure he had a proper chance at Spurs it's interesting that his strike partner Shevchenko also came up short at Chelsea. They had produced a fantastic strike partnership for Dynamo Kiev looking so dangerous but both failed to make much impression in the PL.
Chris Armstrong........Yes, I know.....I know. I'd seen a fair bit of him at Palace and he was great for them and had a pretty decent first season for us. After that......well, you know? In my defence, I wanted Gareth Southgate to be signed too. He would have been a great servant to the club.
Darren Bent. Record of 1 goal every 2 games before he joined us. What the stats didn't show was that he needed about 16 open goal attempts per goal scored.
Super Pav, our body clock forever stuck on Russia timezone striker. Seeing him at Euro 2008, I was really excited at the prospect (while praying he would not be Rebrov mk 2) .
Forgot to ask.Is Pav still playing. Did notice our former Russian right back playing center half in the EL.
