How come any kind of weather seems to cause rail chaos?

Because we have a poorly run, patchwork rail system?

    I can answer that...to a point, anyway

Remember how, when you were on a train, it used to make that "clackity-clack" sound? That was because there was a half inch gap between each rail, so on hot days where metal expands there was room for it to expand into. Modern rails, however, don't have this gap so on days like today the metal can only expand one way - outwards, which causes the rails to warp

This stuff's GCSE Physics, yet somehow nobody considers it

Cos it was privatised to **** and **** all has been invested in the infrastructure so it is constantly on the verge of collapse?

But it will stay warped and not go back into shape when it cools. Therefore they are relaying miles of damaged rail surely.

There is a reason they have used the euphemism "improvement works" for the past decade instead of standard terms like "maintenance" or "repairs" - it's because they have to do so much of them that they hope people are too stupid to figure out why so many blokes in orange jumpsuits are replacing the rails three times a year

We are now in the age of data science + Big data.

Every km of track on every line can be given a unique id.
Every track activity can be tagged as : date + track id + activity (repair/replace etc. reason) .

With all that info stored, then tis simple to find out what is going on when/where/why,
and then apply the appropriate punishments to whoever when incompetence is detected.

The problem is the incompetence can be tracked down to the boardroom of the same building they're tracking the data from

The "social disease" (TM) has to be eradicated.

Which means those at the top in state-owned entities that eff up,
can expect to be fired in disgrace (ie no pay-offs in cash nor to pension pots) .

Bury v MK Dons already postponed/cancelled/suspended/whatever on the opening day of the season as Bury cannot prove "financial viability". Chaos still at Bolton too.
It's about time the PL realised it has some responsibility to the rest of the football in this country.
Otherwise, we'll lose great pyramid structure, full of clubs with great histories and traditions.
I don't want league of the same 20 (or less) rich clubs with little or nothing beneath. That's the inevitable course for football eventually with so much of the money in football concentrated in the hands of so few clubs.

My home town club wycombe v bolton apparently the game goes ahead feck knows what the Efl are doing to decide whether bolton or bury can fulfil their fixtures for the season.I do agree with you the big money should filter down more to lower league clubs otherwise we have lost our heart and and soul and the game we love will be no more for genuine fans
