Except for a gold rush all you need is the best swimmer. Phelps is a great Olympian, but it certainly helps that he's a swimmer! How many golds is a rower going to be able to get in one games? A middle distance runner? (ok, they might conceivably get two). But this idea of measuring the worth of an Olympian by sheer quantity is misleading at best, perhaps even crass.
Were there any black rowers or swimmers ( apart from one little lady)? How come the sprints are taken over by black runners. Is all this weather related or body related?
Depends on what you mean by black. The 2 man in the British gold medal 4 was a Muslim of Morrocan origin.
When's he getting a knighthood? Britons with most Olympic golds: 6 - Sir Chris Hoy 5 - Sir Steve Redgrave Sir Bradley Wiggins Jason Kenny
Chris Hoy seems such a nice bloke and extremely informative in the commentators box. Very good team with Balding who is a fantastic presenter. On the earlier comment about black sprinters, there was a C4 documentary a few years ago by the legend Michael Johnson about slavery and athletics - I think - because I didn't see it but it was supposed to be very interesting. I don't think it's been repeated since.
Didn't intend to stay up but the Murray Del Potro final was just enthralling. One of the most exciting tennis games I've seen with service breaks all over the place and a raucous crowd of Argies supporting their man and Brazilians supporting ours. Neither man deserved to lose really, great display of sportsmanship with both in tears at the end.
Really? What a multi racial community we've become. I can remember driving to Walsall to them play Spurs in the very late 60's in my old Hillman Minx. After the game I returned to my car and checked under the hood. The oil was fine but the radiator needed filling. So I knocked on one door of the terraced buildings where I'd parked and was confronted by a West Indian(?) women and an Indian(?) man. They started yelling at me in some lingo, waving arms,so I thought I had better leave. However,I did find a garage not far away and got my radiator filled. I keep wondering, after all these years, whether the next generation in that house learnt to sprechen ze English. Just one of my many stories following the old Spurs all over the place. Most of the time I travelled alone. My mates weren't to interested so they left me to it.
I saw the documentary, and the hypothesis Johnson put out there (that generations of slavery and the harsh life thereof had genetically put their descendants down a path that leads to a natural advantage in sprinting) did not have any statistically significant proof to support it.
