They've not delivered because the players around them haven't been good enough - which has often been Gerrard's problem at Liverpool too. To be successful at international level, you need
- centre backs who read the game well, can carry the ball forward from defence and distribute it and are usually quick
- midfielders who can retain possession, one of whom is adept at receiving the ball deep and distributing it and one who can play short passes accurately into the spaces between the opposition defenders (like Spain have in abundance)
-quick forwards who can find a yard of space, with good close control and score regularly
England don't have these players. Our defence is vulnerable to pace or skill, our midfield can't retain the ball and has no creativity and we rely on Rooney to be that type of forward we need, yet he ends up dropping deep and trying to be the creative midfielder we need.
It's nothing to do with how good players like Gerrard and Rooney can be individually, but everything to do with the overall lack of quality in the team.
