I was talking to a friend about Chelsea flops since Abramovich has been there. Think of the insane amount of money that he's spent on flops, guys like Veron, Crespo, Mutu, Shevchenko, Torres, it's ****ing mental!!
Afonso Alves anyone? David Bentley has to be up there are 15m too... Francis Jeffers at Arsenal simply because of the Ibra connection...
I don't think the price tag is all you have to consider in whether the guy has been a flop. Arshavin was signed for £12m and by most people's opinions that looked like bargain of the century, but it kind of all went down hill. One decent performance and absolutely nothing else from a guy who was harbouring hopes of using Arsenal as a stepping stone to Barcelona. If we're not talking just about the Premier League we can stick Kaka and Freddy Adu in there as well, for being monumental let downs.
At least Carroll put in a shift regularly when playing for us and contributed regularly to the team ethos, Torres just looks like he doesn't want to be there. Carroll's scored a few important goals or impacted in big games (see final V Chavski), Torres has scored the extra goals which doesn't matter (eg Barca final). Nando is by far the biggest flop. Many isn't far behind though unfortunately, he's saved by his glorious hairstyle. Veron was a major let down, huge money signing at the time given inflation of prices now, and he was awful. Shame, he was a quality player in the Serie A. Same as Sheva. Robinho's a great shout though. Too many flops in the PL than we should be proud of tbh, all clubs have them
Would it be possible to create a flop team? defenders are difficult but Richard Wright or Huerelo Gomez would definately be in goal.
Taibi's the biggest PL flop imo. At least Torres and Carroll have actually played, contributed and done something, and might just turn their form around in the future. Signing Taibi was like paying £4.5 million for Ali Dia. The goalkeeper who couldn't catch, save or even dive without falling over and letting a goal in. The only thing you could say in his favour was that he wasn't all that expensive and was arguably worth a punt with all the cash we'd just made from the treble. But when you consider VDS went in the same transfer window for £500k more then you have to ask WHAT THE **** WAS FERGIE THINKING?!? My personal team of flops: ------------Taibi - -Bogarde--Boumsong--Bramble -Downing--Veron--Aquilani--Brolin -------Carroll--Shev--Torres Bench: R. Wright, Kleberson, Postiga, Traore, Forlan, Marlet, Bentley
Gomes was horrific in his first season - outstanding in his second - poor in his third and ain't played for the last season and a half...so I'd have him down as a disappointment rather than a flop. David Bentley has been an unmitigated disaster for us... It is interesting how many poor buys Damien Comolli was involved in: David Bentley - bought 16m will be lucky to get anything Gomes - bought 8m -------- may get 2m Downing - bought 21m ----- lucky to get 8m Carroll - bought 35m ----- might get 20m Henderson- bought for 20m ----- might get 15m Adam bought for 9m ---- sold for 4m Rocha bought for 1m ---- free Gilberto free - played 1 half - released Hutton bought for 9m --- sold for 6m That lot cost over 115m and will be lucky to raise 55m - none at the end of their career
No offense, but you're way off the mark with Henderson. The lad's been playing well for us. Maybe not worth the 16mill (yet) but he's certainly not a flop. Watch him play maybe.
not seen it yet ( I don't think) but one of our worst buys was also El Hadji-Diouf who just **** and a complete waste of a human being. Missed out on Anelka as well.
Fair enough - re flop - was kind of meaning about Comolli paying over the odds for players. If he's playing well I'm glad (hope he's ****e against us on wednesday though) as it's sad to watch players careers fall apart.
