Not true the story of his wife not settling in Sunderland was pure bunkum, it was internal politics that led to his untimely departure.

Scored against Shrewsbury in the league cup if he wants to pad his stats out :emoticon-0102-bigsm genuinely shocked he had as many as 3 assists here

Not a big signing financially because I think he was free, but for expectation alone I'd say Tommy Miller. Always class against us and a boyhood Sunderland fan but just looked shot to pieces after a couple of games

Just had a look over his career and to be fair he's done ok most places he's played and is still playing now at 45. The fact his only premier league season was with us is probably a big reason for his anonymity<laugh>

I think if you disregard the Stoke game, there won't be many examples of howlers and not commanding his box.

That one game (where at least one of their goals was a foul in my opinion) seems to have defined his performances here in the eyes of many fans which isn't accurate to me.

Mignolet, for example, was far worse at commanding his area, but fans used to love the fact that he came for everything even if he spectacularly misjudged the flight of the ball, which he did on more than one occasion. Gordon was much more risk averse but that was better than coming and getting it wrong.

The one thing Gordon never gets credit for is his positioning. He didn't have as many world class saves to make, because he was in the right position often.

His freak injuries mean that he can't really be called a success here pound for pound, but judging on performance only, he's up there with our better keepers in the last 3 decades in my view.

Transfer technical problem was Stan Cummins at £395,000 . Record signing I think but we failed to give him an inflationary pay rise and he got away for free. Good player but we messed up.

He looked quality when he first broke through at Man U - had a cracking game against us at the SoL. Hasn’t done much since. A couple of good seasons at Sociedad, that’s about it.

Agree with all of this. His fee a record for a keeper at the time meant he was already going to struggle with some! I thought he didn't very well and I agree he is right up there with best keepers we have had.

I said before and stick to it we would have made a decent profit a season or two later without the injury.

I try not to judge players on that, we have had a few look world class against us over the years! <laugh>

Another case of a player thinking he was class at a young age and never fulfilling the promise because if that arrogance?

Yeah, I'll always remember this save against Bolton. Insane reflexes and to get that much strength behind the save to push it over from that range is just mad
