Has that been shown to be true? I know that it was mentioned, it's just that I can't see Ashley doing it as he's very thin-skinned and bloody minded. I'm not going to claim to understand Ashley, but to me it feels unlikely to be a thing that he'd do even if the alternative was actual relegation.
 
As regards the article I'd have been shocked if he'd left for any other reason. He left Bolton for the supposed step-up to Newcastle and it went pear-shaped fast. Sunderland was a very good fit and unless a top top club was going to come for him (and they weren't as he just wasn't a fashionable enough manager to interest the top 4) I think there's a good chance that he'd still be there now. Fine margins.
