I liked Chiang Mai and Ao Nang when I went. Hated Bangkok, thought it had no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

One of my best times was the elephant trecking in chiang nai,

I couldn't get out of Bangkok quick enough. Hired a car and set off up to the old capital (forget the name but a fantastic site of old ruins of grand temples), then up to Chiang Mai which I could happily have stayed at for a few weeks. Loved the trek up into the hills, the paddy fields (in sorts) where opium used to be grown, the temples and views. But the best was the town centre at night, loved it.

Ao Nang was a bit different but enjoyed the chilled out bars and easy night life by the coast.
