Just been having a read through the Saints fans views as you say. It seems the view is the team created a lot but couldn't finish? If so that's not the managers fault imo. We are fortunate that we have some clinical finishers and it's creating we've had issues with. Vardy, Iheanacho and Slimani are all great finishers and Okazaki normally gets it in off his ass or back
I’m distraught. Will give him a chance but I am very very underwhelmed. Think I’d get more excitement putting my willy in a cheese-grater but the board have obviously seen something in him and they don’t get TOO much wrong...
Puel is a decent appointment. He massively overachieved last season and paid with his job for that tbh. Manu - as usual - robbed Puel's league cup. Kept Saints solid and in PL.
Regardless of who came in there would be detractors. Pleased the board have made a decisive step and made an appointment rather than wait a few weeks. Already Everton are on the lookout and there is talk of changes at West Ham and WBA. Imagine if we had a good run with 3 or 4 wins while we waited for a decision then people would be clambering for Appleton full time just like Shakey. At least we now have someone with experience and a half decent record. We just seem to be coming right with Iborra now showing his class, Mahrez getting back to form and still a sensational signing in Silva to come. Things are looking brighter except for the unlucky Shakespeare.
We finished 8th, 6 points of 14th. Rumblings of discontent in the dressing room. A few big names just didn't take to him. Massive fan disconnect, not helped by interviews that will send whole towns to sleep. I liked him, he is a really genuine character, but he has his flaws.
From what I read and heard on the radio he overachieved with a squad missing their best performers in Pelle, Wanyama and Mane - as I have mentioned before I have no real clue as I never paid attention to you last season but multiple sources have said that. For interviews we had managers that connected with the fans and they are on the wayside - boring would be a nice change of pace.
He is not a bad appointment. Robbed in the League Cup Final that would have gotten a Euro Qualification that might have saved him. Saints under Pooch and Koeman played entertaining football that Puel could not replicate and showed little desire to try. Did not dislike him but did not see him as the manager to be pushing for the next level and quite possibly the most boring interviewee l have ever heard or watched.
Fair assessment. But he has a plan & proper method. Compared to Southampton he has better forwards and similar midfield & Defense. He can exceed his previous accomplishment. I think he will be a decent appointment.
I'd take a few seasons trying to stay comfortably clear of relegation tbf, trying to float around 8th to 10th. Consistent league finishes just aren't our thing!
just listened to him on Radio Leicester. Was like pulling teeth. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, BUT if he gets us winning that wont matter a jot !!!! good luck CP
Puel had quite a distinguished playing career and did pretty well as a manager in France. You can only manage what you've got player wise - so was the criticism at Saints really just down to his 'style of playing', or did he simply not have the players at his disposal to play in the same manner as Pochettino or Koeman was able to? ... look what Koeman has been doing with Everton in that regard. Ranieri was very shrewd with the way in which he used the squad he inherited with us. Soon realised that we were never going to out pass the top teams so didn't bother trying - counter attacking football to obvious effect from a solid and combative base. I think Proud will be disappointed with his prediction. Personally I'd be amazed to see Nigel Pearson get a third stint at the club ... primarily because of the direction in which the owners seem to want to take us - for me, that strongly suggests they want a real tactician who will develop us in more of a continental mode with greater emphasis on the purer technical aspects. I think they like Nigel and may use him in a feeder capacity to identify prospective purchases from Europe, whilst also developing their Belgian club.... but only time will tell.
Came out with some good stuff I thought: "When I arrive I come to the club in my colours, I take the badge and I have to live the club. It's important to defend the colours of the club." Claude Puel's Blue and White Army!
Posted on the Saints board but you might enjoy. If you ever find one of his interviews boring just switch to this.
