As a boy, 55,000 packed into the Hawthorns. We arrived at one o'clock and stood up against the wall behind the goal. In the early sixties, when my dad moved to Altrincham, the atmosphere at Old Trafford watching Best, Law and Charlton. In more recent times, apart from the Vic, I quite enjoyed visits to rather rundown grounds...Rotherham, Gillingham, Chesterfield etc
Back in the times of standing terraces definitely Anfield. Once went to Hampden Park for a Scotland - England match with my father (who was born in Glasgow), I think it was about 1970 or so. The atmosphere was like no other I have seen, and that, for me, is what makes a stadium - the architecture of the place is irrelevant as long as the sound carries. From modern stadiums I have been to I would have to pick the Westfalen Stadium in Dortmund - 80,000 capacity, always full, and a 20,000 standing home end - they have the largest standing terraces in Europe. The atmosphere at most German stadiums is similar to England in the old days, because most of them have standing areas - also I can go behind the stand at half time for a cigarette which I can't do at many grounds in England now. Another great ground is St.Pauli in Hamburg.
