Yep, that was a classic moment. Another is David Coleman's commentary during the the 1976 FA Cup. I don't have to look it up because I know it almost word perfectly. It goes... McCalliog, to Stokes who's onside..!?! 1-0..! [pause for wild celebrations] Southampton Go Mad..! It actually gives me a lump in the throat just thinking about it. Well I did look it up in the end, just to find the video. Usually you'll find ITV's Brian Moore's voice, which was a pale shadow behind Coleman's commentary. 2m50s in, if you don't want to watch the entire video.
I loved Dave Merringtons Didley Dee comment about one of our central defenders, cant remember the game now but it was a classic!
I used to listen to Saints on the radio in the 90s and the commentator had to get the sponsership slogan in which was always "Carling Black Label, brewed for a fuller football flavour!" so any of his commentry is my favourite. I also remember Diego Forlan scoring in an international match, and Keegan said "He can get his roots done now!".
Welcome to Bologna on Capital Gold for England versus San Marino with Tennent's Pilsner, brewed with Czechoslovakian yeast for that extra Pilsner taste and England are one down.
What do you mean, "if you don't want to watch the entire video"? Who would not want to watch that!? I think it gives a slighty wrong impression of the game. I remember the opening few minutes being a bit nervy, and of course when they hit the bar, but apart from that it was quite comfortable really. I hadn't really noticed Hugh Fisher before. Obviously genuinely pleased. Did he get a medal back then, I can't remember. I do remember his last minute goal against Villa, almost wished he hadn't scored at the time as we were doing pretty well in the league and looked good for promotion. Best day of my life (don't tell my wife I said so!).
That Norway commentary has to be the best ever (although not really a commentary, more a post-match analysis). Kenneth Wolstenholme's, "They think its all over....." has to be right up there.
I just think some of the younger ones find it a bit old hat, so I gave them a place to tune-in. Me, I watched all of it.
"Only Matthew Le Tissier would score from there, because only Matthew Le Tissier would THINK of scoring from there" - Tony Gubba RIP.
One for the oldies on here. Do you remember Joe Jordan? Can't remember the match, but I remember the exuberant commentary when he scored, along the lines of.. "The ball is in the net. The teeth are in the changing room! "Joe Jordan scores!" How come I remember that after 30+ years?
As much as I dislike Man Utd...
Me too, TSS, thanks for that. Whenever I see that I always love the way Lawrie Mac gives Ted Bates a big hug at the final whistle, and you realise how big Lawrie was. But for all the emotion of 1976 at Wembley, 10 years before that has to be the pick of the bunch. Thanks Pieking, took me back to being 12 and watching in black and white on a clockwork telly, and my whole family screaming with joy.
Thank you TSS. The only words that make the best commentary piece: "McCalliog to Stokes, who's on side...." Love that.
The sad thing for me is that, although I supported Saints as the underdogs and because Bobby Stokes was in the same school team as my brother, I wasn't a Saints fan at the time. My eternal shame and regret. About time we won it again!!
Don't tell anyone Fran, but I was 7 and popped outside to play at half time and only got called back in when we scored!! Btw, I met Bobby Stokes in 1987 and asked him what it was like to score the winner in a cup final. His reply will live with me for ever and I tell all united fans I meet: "oh, I shinned it" .. Brilliant.
