You know, not a significant game really but the game that had the lot, atmosphere, action, madness, for me was the 3-1 v Spurs a few years back with Bent missing 2 pens and just the daftest end to end football I've seen. We'd all had our shredded wheat the town was buzzing for the whole game and the place was bouncing. More important games, great nights, but that day was just daft from top to bottom.
Missed the quote from Sunderland 7 Arsenal 1 Len Shackleton always saved his best for Arsenal games as they turned him down early in his career
Man City in the 5th round of the cup in 1973. Mags away when we beat them in the play offs 2-0 Charlton in the 4-4 draw at Wembley.. These are the that came to mind..
That would be in my top 5 definitely, can't really pin point one game but a few like the above stand out. Burnley at home when Carlos Edwards struck a V2 bomber from the moon into the top corner of the North Stands net Leeds away (2nd game under Keane) sat outside the pub at 11am, left from Hebburn for Leeds at 4 perhaps a bit wobbly and stuffed Leeds 3-0 in their own back yard, atmosphere was brilliant! Charlton game at Wembley, I can remember the first half been pretty dull but rest of the game was mental. Blackburn away on boxing day, played like Brazil and stuffed them 3-0 Good times
Could name some great games but I've picked this one.gordon armsrongs Last minuet wining header against Chelsea FA cup 1992 Great game and atmosphere
I think it was late 80s/ early 90s. We were 2nd in the table and we played Milwall who were top. We thrashed them 6-0 with Craig Russell scoring 4. The other 2 are Charlton at Wembley and Chelsea with Armstrongs header.
That Millwall match was amazing. I was in the Clock Stand which was unusual as I was a Main Stand Roker Wing kid but some pals were going as a one off. Was almost surreal how much we minced them.
Man City in '73 for me as well. Also enjoyed our 1-4 win at the Mags with Lord Rowell hat trick ...Good day.
correction 2 ladies 1 camera man, who couldn't believe the stamina. Do you want the job of cameraman next time. the vids sell well for depraved mags
From a completely different perspective the game that sticks out in my mind was Reading away at Roots Hall in late 1990s (I think) when we were stuffed 4-0 by a very ordinary Reading team. After the match the players entrance was surrounded by Sunderland fans, dogs abuse and shirts & scarves were chucked at the team as they left to get on the bus, Reidy was left in no doubt what the fans felt. He brought in Darren Williams & Jodie Craddock and the rest was history under Reidy's tenure.
Agree with everything here, Nostalgic. We did frighten the life out of them. But the amazing thing was, it was with one of the worst bunch of players I've ever seen in Sunderland shirts. McPheat, Dillon & co. - there wasn't a footballer amongst them. We got stuffed 5-0 in the replay, and that was about right. But. credit where due - they had their moment. A fantastic second half. EDIT : i queued from 9 p.m. on Sunday night to get into that game. Well worth it.
That 6=0 against Millwall was 1995-96, and it's effect was amazing. Millwall never recovered. and went from top in December to relegation in May! That 6-0 hammering broke them.
And Arsenal were league champions at the time of that 7=1. Fredor is right - Shack always kept a little something for that game. I was at that game, and the ones after it. We beat them 7-1, 5-2 and 3-1 in a row, and , believe me, the 3-1 was the biggest humiliation of the lot. We might as well have taken ten players off the field that day, and left Len to deal with it. It was, quite frankly, the Shackleton Show. I'm one of Diego Maradona's biggest fans, and a big fan of George Best and Wilf Mannion too, but I have honestly never seen any man do things with a ball like Shackleton. Absolutely incredible.
That was the game that Danny Blanchflower described the Roker Roar as " Frightening in its intensity " I went to the replay and they gave Sunderland a football lesson , agree with everything you say about the first game , Roker Park was packed
