I reckon England vs. Belgium in 1990 for me. I was 11 at the time and although already heavily into City when Platt scored that volley it was the first time I experienced the extreme highs that football can give you. I remember being swung round the living room by old man and going nuts with my brother. Even my mum was excited. Quite sad really that despite (or because of) attending most England games live nowadays I can't ever imagine myself getting that excited by an England game again. 4-1 v Holland and 1-5 v Germany in 2nd and 3rd for me. Also a mention for a 3-3 draw with Sweden, I think in Le Tournoi before Euro '96 - Darren Anderton equalising in the last minute with a screamer that hit both posts before going in?
There was something special about world cup Italia when you think back on the games with Belgium and Germany, Linekers goals, Gazzas meltdown , Bobby Robson caving into player power and so on. I think its the tournament that got away from us really, if we had beat West Germany we would have had the Argies in the final and they played an awful match.
without a doubt. Nothing will ever beat that game or day. Even now when i watch it again the memories come flooding back. The Germany semi final game from Italia 90, Holland game @ wembley 1996 euros and the 5-1 away win in Germany also stand out. But..... 1966 is way out in front.
Not saying this is the best game but we played really well. Probably what gave us all the hype about the "golden generation" and they never really produced a performance like this again.
You thought it was depressing? One of my mates turned up at the pub for that with 2-1 England, Lampard first goal, and it was either 80/1 or 100/1. My prediction prematch was 2-1 France with either Lampard or Gerrard to score the opener. Knowing the odds for us to win 2-1 with first goal would be a lot shorter than for us to lose 2-1 I was more than a bit gutted about not having nipped to the bookies.
Just to prove i didn't make that 3-3 draw and Anderton goal up...
The 5-1 win in Munich is probably the best i've seen, i'm too young to properly remember Holland in 96. Argentina at the 2002 world cup was a pretty sweet victory! Other than that, there's not really been much of note in the last 15 years.
There have been quite a few I've enjoyed - Poland in 86 with Lineker's hat trick, I enjoyed the game against the German's in 90 despite the result, Holland in Euro 96, the 5-1 in Munich to name but a few
Got to be 5-1 against Germany in Munich but my favourite moment was Gascoigne's goal against Scotland in Euro 96
