Beckham was such a limited player that it's criminal as to how he became so sought after. But he certainly was world class in dead ball situations. Ronaldo is actually one of the most overrated FK takers - doesn't score that many compared to how many he takes.
He was certainly limited, but his dead ball skills are a sought after commodity, so I can certainly see the appeal. You could argue the same about Van Nistelrooy, he was also a limited player, but the talent he had, a killer instinct in front of goal and being in the right place at the right time to bury it, made him one of the best strikers of his time ditto with Lineker and Costa. As I have said before, Ronaldo and Messi are the best because they are more complete than probably any other players I have ever seen. They have pace, power, accuracy, passing ability, they are good at dead balls, Henry too, maybe to a slightly lesser degree.
Limited ffs He wasnt a flashy player by any stretch but he was a solid player who added far more than just freekicks and corners. His partnership with Neville was brilliant and they were a constant threat. He didn't need a freekick to to deliver an inch perfect ball or score a spectacular goal.

Limited maybe but that doesn't mean a player was poor. It's about utilising the abilities you have to maximise your contribution. Beckham and Carragher are two perfect examples.
It's funny how ppl are criticising Ronaldo continuously, based on his time in La Liga. And then dumming down Beckham's ability WITHOUT taking into account his time in La Liga. A bit of parity wouldnt go amiss.
John Barnes was pretty special at free kicks. Usually didn't even bother taking a run up either. Worth a shout for sure Also Jan Molby for any dead ball situation. That's my Liverpool bias out the way - has to be Beckham, although I agree with an earlier post that the balls and boots had improved so much (even since Barnes and Molby) that it's impossible to come to a solid conclusion.
