And unlike Barcelona the flamenco is real and gutsy. I saw a fantastic flamenco in the back of a backstreet bar/restaurant in the city centre a couple of years back and will never forget it. Must do it again soon.
Hotel esteria(pretty sure it's spelt like that) in Amsterdam, wonderful place to stay in a wonderful city. It has it all, nightlife, cafés, walks and rides along the canals. Relax in the park or take day trips out to the tulip fields and the coastal towns are pretty. Red Light District is worth a visit at night, just to see it(I was there with the wife, it's cool to see). We done all this in the space of 4 days and it didn't feel rushed at all, hope it helps....
if you are around 42 then maybe we played with the same people during summer holidays i still have family there
Wow, cheers everyone. I didn't expect such a good response. There have been some excellent recomendations, even some from people off of other boards. I shall have a read up of the places mentioned and hopefully my better half will have a great trip. Thanks to all of you once again, nines.
Thanks finglas. I must admit I did enjoy your description of Munich and it's surroundings. That sort of trip appeals to me. My wife loves anything to do with WWll, so she'd enjoy ( if thats the right word? ) the trip to Dachau. But she also would be happy laying in the sun all day. I must admit that I've been to quite a few places mentioned. I didn't want to state which ones as I was interested to see how others had experienced them. I plan to do a city break every year so hopefully I'll eventually get to visit all those that are recommended on this thread. Of course when QPR get into Europe that should get a lot of new places ticked off. I'm fortunate that my wife loves football and would be happy to incorporate a match into any break as well.
Although I was born on a cold November morning in perivale part of me wants to nip about on a Vespa looking dead cool and sipping expressos in the piazza. Maybe I'm watching too many episodes of 'Montalbano' on bbc4... The Byron is excellent, proper class and there are a couple of absolutely fantastic restaurants on the beachfront. Some of the best food I've eaten outside of the best restaurant in the world (IMO) 'L'huitriere' in Lille
My mother was also born there went every year for the first 17 years of my life any many times for the races and the Feis Ceoil a few years back.
Feis Ceoil ... Yes! I was there as well when younger in the 80s. What a beutiful time there. Now I know why I knew Listowel ...
You can fly dead cheap to Bergamo with RyanAir, and stay in the old town on top of the hill. Great old buildings, and great restaurants. Bergdamo is near Milan which is expensive but worth a look, and Como and Garde, nice country.
