I'd also like to add Gil Scot Heron, Brian Jackson and the Midnight band at the Dominion Theatre... Amazing gig.
The Orb before them was good too. Little Fluffy Clouds live was top drawer. Not that I was off me head or owt, obvs! Who was main act on the pyramid that night? Can't recall right now but glad I wasn't swayed to go see them instead. It might have been Morrissey thinking about it so no doubt close run thing for me.
Did you watch The Proclaimers in 1989 by the way? Both wearing Hibernian shirts, they were brilliant, fair play. I've been a fan ever since. That was an especially good Glastonbury, sunny throughout. You could nip in and out of town in the car too, I imagine the crowd was half the size of those they cram in now. The bands I went specifically to see were Wonderstuff and Martin Stephenson & the Daintees but I 'discovered' loads of great bands. I was vegetarian for ten year after that Glastonbury!
Ha ha. I remember seeing Bhundu boys that year. We bunked over the fence on Friday night, and camped under the pilons. My second Glasters
Favourite gigs Eric B Rakim Rainbow 86 EPMD town country club 88ish Public Enemy at the Odeon 87 Ultramagnetic MCs Dingwalls 87
Best live? For me Beck, Cypress Hill (going to see again in December), DJ Shadow, Gomez, Echobelly (for Sonya, definitely wid), Portishead, Massive Attack, REM .... Going to see Garbage on Friday (Shirley... wid!)
De La Soul was 1990, I didn't go. Fairly sure I bombed Morrissey out to see Primal Scream, and it was a good call. I've seen Moz loads anyway and that Screamadelica show, for it was more or less that, was proper memorable. Saw Tom Jones that year too, that was a laugh.
Bobby Womack at Hammersmith very atmospheric as opposed to Kool & the Gang which was ruined by knobs with whistles.
Seen a lot of great band through my lifetime, Jethro Tull the first ever, Free, Floyd, Zeppelin x2, Sabbath, Purple, U2 Joshua tree tour, Simple Minds, INXS, Humble Pie, Rod Stewart, Simon and Garfunkel in NY, Bon Jovi, AC/DC x2 and lots more.. The best gig ever was Wishbone Ash in 1972 at Newcastle City Hall, the 3 artists/groups I'd love to have seen, Mountain, Cream and Rory Gallagher.. I photographed Bad Company at the Newcastle Metro Arena in 2016, they are a hell of a live band too, Paul Rogers, the same as 40 years ago..
Mickey Ralphs summed it up at the after show stuff, we are all like fat and heavy and here's Paul like it was 40 years ago without the hair. I actually think Paul Rogers is one of the greatest singers ever, next to Steve Marriott.. I wont include Robert Plant, for me Marriott was better..
