Well we agree then it comes down to terminology. Is it about a good signing performing well? Is it about expectations of a player? Is it about good value for money? They are all different. I actually feel for the fans that judge a player by their own expectations and feel for the players too. They can't control those expectations. Judging by your 'expect to play like a 50k player' you think Chappers is much better than Corkie???? (I am tongue in cheek here, but it is a valid jest) Corkie should have given 15 times what Chappers did Your very last sentence, "In actual fact had he been able to give to the team as much as Chaplow, I'd have been reasonably happy" is in fact just a repetition of the earlier point about expectations...... you only feel that because of your expectations. One could say that all Chappers did was run up and down a lot and work his nuts off, whereas one could say that Ramirez showed 'some' glimpses of quality and class and contributed with some goals and assists....... I'm not meaning to start a Chappers/Ramirez comparison, but just showing that your view seems highly effected by your expectations. I completely disagree with the sentence: "He cost 25 times more than Chaplow so it is not unreasonable that we should expect more from him and so, inevitably, he will be judged by his price tag" I judge a player by how they perform on the pitch and only this. So my assessment of Ramirez is that he hasn't been a success because he hasn't delivered enough on the pitch, regardless of his price tag. I assume that if he had scored 10 goals and had 10 assists you would have thought he was only ok.... because divided by 12m, that's not that great a return???? PS. He cost a lot, lot more than 25 times Chaplow Cork cost 15 times more... is he 15 times the player?

Chaplow scored a cracking goal against Man U, when we were in League 1. That paid off his fee 20 times over, even if he'd never done anything else for us.
The question is why was he introduced into the deal. I think it was probably because we weren't happy with the fee they were offering so they said "we have this talented youngster you could loan", and that tipped the balance. So in that case it could be thought of as loosing money, unless we said if he doesn't work out we get x amount.

As soon as Chelsea signed Fabregas I put them down to be Champions (Class and no real adjustment time required). Obviously the title is not won in August but I can feel smug thus far Worst individual for me is Enner Valencia and now we've played West Ham I can rest that this prediction won't bite me in the bum. £12m for a guy who is essentially good at jumping. I would go as far to say that this is a clueless signing based on a handful of world cup matches. Andy Carroll copy but with even less presence. Angle Di Maria is another great signing and he will help pick United up. Liverpool played with a reasonably weak defence last term and did very well. I don't think United will get back in the champions league but they'll get back to being entertaining to watch.
In the last year, ManU have been at their most entertaining over the previous 25, as far as I'm concerned. They were particularly excellent the other week when MK Dons beat them 4-0. I thought they were wonderful and I look forward to many more occasions of this ilk before they become dull and predictable again. Unluckily, they just caught MKDs on a good day.
