£2.5m?! It was reported a week ago they had agreed an £800k fee for him with Boro, £200k-£300k + Fryatt will be fine!

Ignore that I've just seen they've upped there bid to £2m

I still maintain we should have tried to get Bianchi during the summer, he was a freebie too.

He didnt say that it was impossible we would get one but he pretty much did.

    http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11661/8896192?

"For us to go and make a huge difference, to get a striker who can get 20 goals a year, where does a club like ours get them?

"They are few and far between and, if they are capable of getting 20 goals a season, they're usually too expensive.

"Can you get one in? It's always difficult but we're always trying. "

I suppose it's how you want to read it, but I would say Steve Bruce is offering hope and saying that it is difficult, but not impossible, and that they are trying to do it (obviously a very short candidate list). Bear in mind that a player might not have scored 20 goals/season before, but a decent and confident manager might believe he (and his coaching staff) can get that out of him (the opposite regularly applies, also); it's as much about potential as historic performance. There's more to sports development and progression than stats, which is how too many players are judged; the successful transfers are usually the ones where real scouting has been completed - a good season in one teams tactics and environment does not guarantee the same in another set-up and vice versa.

So he pretty much didn't as well!

I get what you are saying but in reality, there is just about 0% chance we can get a 20 goal scorer on our roster. Can we get a veteran 20 goal scorer? No. Can we get someone close who is coming into their prime? Hell no. Can we get some young player out there that has that capability? No, because anyone that good is already on the radar of all the big clubs. Can we get someone who could be a 20 goal a season striker with the right service? Certainly no, what are we Man U? We dont have that kind of midfield or set up men to take someone who has bagged 10 and turn them into a 20. The fact is that it is like a .0000001% chance we can get one.

Not to say that Bruce cant find a gem out there who can bag 10 or so but 20 goals in the PL is on a completely different level though. That is Bale, RVP, Suarez level. Wont happen.

    Kevin Phillips
    Alan Shearer
    Gary Lineker

    They weren't always prolific.

Never say never; it eventually breaks for players in the right club, the right team, the right partnership, the right league or just because they sort their own **** out.

The big clubs often buy their stars from obscurity, which would not be the case in your world. Too cynical, ellewoods; expect the unexpected and enjoy the ride. :emoticon-0103-cool:

If you read some of the articles that have been coming out over the past day, it looks like he'll cost to much due to his wages.

We're saying we can't afford him; why don't we have a bid (a low one) accepted and actually speak to him? If he wants to play first team football and ensure his place in the international squad, he'll agree terms that suit him and we'll be able to tell him the highest we can go. We don't know if he'll accept it or not, but if we don't ask, then how are we to know? We should point to Huddlestone as a prime example of putting football first.

We bid for him earlier in the window, it was accepted but the deal broke down due to personal terms. Or so I read in some article yesterday.

Both McCormack and Fryatt are now into there final year of contracts. We should offer a straight swap and add Stewart as a sweetener. That should help. ;) TWS would be getting a proven championship goalscorer and we would be getting a striker who has ambition and can score goals in the PL.

They wont offer what McCormack wants. Simples. They could loose him for nowt next summer.

Dont rule it out. SB despite what he says in public has something up his sleeve other than his arm. <whistle>

Nope. No he did not thanks to PDiC. <grr>

SSN mentioned it last night which is good enough for me.

Ah fair enough. I just thought with all the talk of inflated wages we hadn't actually spoken to him and were counting ourselves out without even trying. I'm surprised Brucey didn't say to him "You're a decent footballer, but you haven't been banging in 20 a season so why would we pay you as much as somebody who does? Come and play for us for a season and then if you do well, we'll give you a better contract. You know, like everywhere else in football."

If he says no to that, then he's a dick.
