If the season is abandoned then NOBODY should get promoted or relegated unless it’s mathematically decided in BOTH directions.
Leeds and WBA, whilst comfortably ahead, could both still end up in a playoff position at the expense of any of the top 8 teams - including ourselves.
Likewise at the bottom, nobody is mathematically relegated. not even Liverpool have mathematically won the league yet.
Stop the league. Issue a special cup or medal to recognise positions at the time perhaps but start again next season - or continue next season into a ‘mega’ season to incorporate this seasons points tally.

However they manage it the season has to be finished, if I were Leeds or WBA or other teams vying for promotion (including us), I would insist upon it or I would take legal action for loss of income and also my inherent hatred of the serial FFP cheats Villa means I want them back down to get their just desserts.

There is talk today of splitting the lower leagues (championship downwards) into north and south leagues for one season, to shorten next season.

But this season has to be finished as and when.

What difference does it make when this season is finally finished? had it been perhaps December I would agree with but we are talking 9 games.

you didn't explain why this season has to finish?? people are talking about finishing a league when its not 100% safe. disgusting all about money while people are dying. no wonder football is looked upon as the greedy dregs pf society. lives are at stake the world is not all about greedy clubs wanting balls being kicked about.

At some point football , and other mass gatherings, will go ahead again. With only 9 games remaining in the present season why on earth wouldn’t you conclude it. The following season can start straight afterwards and any adjustments can be made from then on, they’d have to have been made anyway as to conclude this season is only likely to take 6 weeks anyway.

Nobody is suggesting finishing this season when it isn’t safe, but at some point will restart , why not conclude this season before starting the next .

I don't understand why when it's safe even if it's in 12 months time this season cannot be finished then, you seem to think I am implying that football should start again on Saturday, we are talking about 9 games.

Why do you think we are where we are at the moment regarding major sport?

The government knew that if they 'ordered' football or even the Cheltenham festival to close down, that they would end up footing the bill or risk legal action to recover money or even worse the collapse of the insurance sector in the UK.

They gave football and the racing authorities all of the information available and that information basically told them them because we were not lockdown the government would not make that decision for them, it was their decision to make but maybe closing down their operations was in the best interests of the ongoing situation and of course football and the Cheltenham festival organisers prevaricated until the last possible moment in the hope that the government would bail them out, football independently did the right thing but Cheltenham never blinked and went ahead.

Now as for Cheltenham if todays latest news is actually true, that the UK infection rate peaked 2 weeks before lockdown was ordered, had the government continued to listen to their 'experts' and continued with the 'herd mentality' policy ala Sweden who are pretty much living normal lives and haven't had anywhere near the percentage of deaths as the rest of Europe, instead of listening to the WHO who have pretty much gotten everything wrong from day 1, not bowed to the pressure of the media, experts like Corbyn, Stormer and Piers Morgan, maybe we wouldn't even be having this conversation.

Just for clarity the above last paragraph is pretty much an opinion based on the ever changing latest medical and scientific information.

Football people are talking about Football, big shock!. Nobody is saying that it should start back up when its unsafe to do so. The people in charge of football can do nothing about the people who are sadly dying as they are in charge of football matters. It is in their remit however to talk about and find solutions of how football can resume once they have been given the information that it is safe to do so

I in my workplace now have colleagues who have worked with people who have died after contracting corona virus, one of the people I support Mother ill from the virus died in intensive care and he could not visit her … As a nation we cannot get the majority of our NHS and key worker staff tested yet but the Premier league feels it can plan to resume its football. That is repugnant.

Why is it? They have no control over the NHS or testing it's staff. They control football and planning for the restart, whenever that may be, is surely what they should be doing. Football as will all other activities and businesses will start again at some point.

If the remaining home games this season are not played in front of fans - will there be a season ticket refund?

Football (the EPL) is planning to restart its activities before the rest of society.

I wonder if this crisis will wake anyone up in the football industry or will it just highlight those who really care about the sport and those whose mindset is all about the money? The finances of football at the top level make me want to scream and I would like see the transfer fees and wages moderate to a mutually acceptable level.

This pandemic should make the entire world re-think the priorities of life and focus on the key things in life such as safety, health and security, family and the population's overall well being. Will it happen - probably not.

    Stay safe and well everybody.

There again football exists for society. Overblown and obscenely funded it may be, but nevertheless it's raison d'etre is driven by "society".

The relaxation of restrictions on the game, albeit played under the sterile behind closed doors format is a start toward leading us out of this mess. If normality is to be achieved and give a large portion of "society" a lift, it needs the sport to lead the way.

No doubt the game will be accused of being fuelled by cash rather than altruism, but then you can't have it all ways.
