You'd think that someone at Topshop would have questioned the legality of printing one of the world's most famous people all over their gear without getting their permission first, wouldn't you? Is she getting a hefty damages payment as well?
Now if only The Ramones, The Descendants, Iron Maiden and The Rolling Stones could wage the same war. It's so annoying; people weearing band t shirts, when they don't even know the music.

Those bands probably all have agreed to it and are paid for it. It's pretty bizarre that Topman would try to put a famous face on their merchandise without getting the legal rights.
Your latter point stands though. My sister wears an Iron Maiden t-shirt and I'm sure she never listens to them. The Ramones ones are everywhere, and I saw a Bob Dylan one in Next the other day which I'm sure will be purchased by thousands of teens who have no idea who he is.
A girl I know was wearing a Beatles t-shirt and didn't know who Lennon was.....
Talking of clothing labels, Abercrombie and Fitch are in a legal battle due to discrimination based on the looks of the models they employ.

That's a ridicuous argument (that it's just PC). Is completely pointless arguing that x is more important historically than y - you could argue it for the people on notes now. Is the same circular arguments that kick off when some magazine publishes a 100 Best Albums, or 100 Best Football Players list. Why do our banknotes need to be populated by the ten unequivocally most historically important figures - what's up with a bit of diversity (not the dance troupe) to represent the fact we achieve in more than just industrial, engineering, and financial areas? Jane Austen is actually a massive export, and is responsible for drawing a lot of tourism for one, from places like Japan and the US; plus I bet she is likely to be one of the most globally well-known figures on our notes, in terms of name recognition. Could care less if it was her or another woman, but think it's a decent choice.
As for the argument that a male author would be nowhere near a banknote, I remember Charles Dickens being on a £10 note, and can't remember there being any argument about that. I think it would actually be a bit ridiculous if banknotes were populated solely by male historical figures - any woman who made breakthroughs in the past are as deserving as men simply through the sheer perseverance and bravery it would have taken to achieve greatness against such a tide of societal dominance by men.
More to the point, why do people care so much? It's not like they're puting Harold Shipman (Florence Nightingale arguments notwithstanding) or Jimmy Saville on there.
