Yeah but I'm sure games like that are relatively rare in American Football. In rugby, the type of game like today's between England and Ireland are commonplace. Very much so.

Well, exactly :p Perhaps it'd be more accurate to say I don't understand why people keep comparing them exclusively.

Because they are full-contact territorial games played with ovoid balls based on accumulating points by getting said ball into the other teams large rectangular goal areas whilst it is in your possession or kicking the through large upright posts 18 feet apart. Only important differences are downs, forward passing, pads and the penalty systems. There's also the similarities in punting and drop-kicking from deep for territory, and the reviewing system with the referees mic'd up.

Some important differences which define the games obviously but also numerous similarities.

Well then I don't see how anyone could like football but not basketball. Both non-contact flowing possession games with spherical balls based on accumulating points by getting said ball into the other team's selected netted scoring area. Only important differences are possession with a different part of the body, size difference of netted area and penalty systems.

Or, because the rules are completely different, watching the games are completely different experiences, they require exceedingly differing skillsets and are altogether different, comparing the two is an exercise for the ignorant or the stupid.

Tbf, I'm only comparing American Football to rugby as I often hear people saying it's just rugby for girls or rugby for wusses who like padding. They're very different but I still think rugby is **** and today's game against Ireland just supports my view.

And American Football is a lot closer to rugby than basketball is to football.

It was an intentionally ridiculous comparison to prove a point about how picking out a few similarities doesn't retract significantly enough from the differences to make the comparison worthwhile.

I like both games. The thing is, with the NFL, you have to take the whole razzamatazz thing into the equation. Imagine Beyonce playing at half time in the Heineken Cup Final? No, thought not. Rugby is pretty much full-on war with mostly the same players playing the whole game, non-stop apart from set-pieces. American Football is all set-pieces with short bursts of incredible skill and athleticism in between. Dan is right, you can't really compare them.

And neither of them is actually football.

I think you've misunderstood my point as I'm not saying anyone who likes Rugby has to like American Football nor that they are to be compared, I'm merely challenging your assertion that they are not very similar games. Similar games with important and defining differences but similar all the same and to say otherwise is daft. The fact that one is actually derived from the other and they maintain their key similarities should be evident, and to say that likening the two is akin to likening Football and Basketball is just asinine.

They're not very similar. They have fundamental similarities but a straight up comparison is an exercise in futility. We could also compare hockey and football, which have far more similarities than rugby and American football, but it'd be a waste of everyone's time. Why? Because the two experiences are so different that a comparison is unnecessary. It's the same for football and rugby.

Let me rephrase my original quote which stated this debate:

That's why American Football, cricket, lacrosse, hockey, badminton, tennis, swimming, athletics, football, volleyball, fencing, netball, basketball, medieval re-enactment, archery, table tennis, rounders, baseball are better. They're all very different to rugby but they're all a damn sight more entertaining than rugby too (IMO).

Now that's just getting silly. After all, you know the result. Mind you, it's still better than Rugby League. Union's OK though.

It wasn't intended to be a personal shot at you so don't feel the need to rephrase or anything - it was more frustration at the general assumption that the sports need to be compared at every opportunity - as a keen American Football fan I get a lot of "why do you think rugby is **** if you like it when there's pads?" and it's tiring because the sports are far too different to be compared in such fashion.

Also medieval re-enactment sounds great fun.

Hmm, maybe. I once heard a Goon Show [The Histories of Pliny the Elder] where the Britons and the Romans were fighting, after the Romans had just crossed the Channel. Only the Britons thought they were playing football. Seagoon complained to the other manager, Pliny. He said... Hang on, there's only meant to be 11 a side. I've counted 643 of yours, so far. Pliny: Ok, I'll take one off. Seagoon: And another thing, my winger takes the ball up-field and your fullback has a go at him with a dirty big sword..!

    Bluebottle: Come in Eccles!
Eccles: How do I come in?
Bluebottle: Turn the knob on your side.
Eccles (puzzled): I haven't got a knob on my side!

Oh TSS... if I had let my wife see that, I would never have been allowed to send you any Jerk Seasoning! She was brought up in Wigan and her mum is still a Warriors season ticket holder.

Friday nights in our house are interesting.

Medieval re-enactment was quite fun but despite using blunt swords (and axes, etc) it was bloody painful at times, and you'd usually end up with cuts and bruises. Though fighting a 6'6 German dude who's strong and big enough to use a two handed sword with one hand was always 'fun'. I quitted it after a while, I can't remember why though.
