I have just begun reading this threads and apologies if I am a couple of days behind and the subject has moved on to something else.

How anyone can judge a country by spending a couple of hours either travelling on its motorways (autobahns) or spending time inside an airport needs to get out and see some more of the country before expressing such a negative view.

I lived close to Dortmund for 5 years in the late 1970's and early '80's while with the British Army. Rather than travel back to the UK whenever I had leave I would travel and discover the country. In the south of the country (close to Munich) are the Alps with some good skiing locations, further north along the Rhine and Mosel valleys are many beautiful places to visit and if you only wish to go to the country to see some football, this has been of a high standard for much longer than in Britain both in the standard played and in the facilities. I still have many happy memories of watching Dortmund at was then the Westfalenstadion as well as going to the nearby concert arena of the same name to see bands performing.

Adam Banana (Gaston Ramirez) maybe you should travel around Europe a little and see some of its finer points before criticizing a country because of a few individuals you met.
America is not all it is made out to be either. Plenty of poverty and social problems not covered by TV.

So you have used three tourist areas as positives to your feelings of Germany against a city.

You obviously use wikipedia as you used it to highlight an earlier point. Try using it to find some tourist areas of Germany and not the one location that your fears of this country come from.

In the 1980's I had a chance to visit Belsen. I was shocked by what I saw and it brought home some of the horrors of that period in history and the cruelty man can endure on other human beings. I think the silence (plenty of visitors, just nobody talking, no birds flying overhead) and the unnatural colour of the grass on the burial mounds with estimated numbers they each contained were my most poignant memories of that visit.

I've just seen this on the Everton Board which is totally deserted. Thought I'd post it on here as it deserves to be seen by more people.

    Because you were there

Because you were there, as the weary bird flew,
Weighed down with despair and 96 sorrows,
And gave it home comfort, a prince's tower,
Of strength and friendship, steadfast in our hour.

Because you were there, as a country sneered,
With lies and derision, for twenty three years,
And you gave hope in the darkness, a golden vision and
    Royal blue blanket of care.

Because you were there, our sisters, our cousins,
Our neighbours our mothers, our friends always near,
We never walked alone, or lacked for a brother
who was nothing but the best, to soften a tear.

Because you were there, the wings are now lighter,
And rested to lift the souls to their peace,
We'll always remember the debt that we owe you,
    Compassion that's true blue,
    Because you were there.

Bit sentimental i know, but many thanks for twenty three years of being our rock.
Not that it looks like anyone will ever read it on here... :emoticon-0120-doh:

    Congrats!
Mine is just turning a year old, best thing that has ever happened. It is a game changer though, everyone says your life will change completely and you tend not to believe them. But guess what? It does! Its hard work but worth every second.

Go with the flow and remember Mum know's best.

In Germany you can buy beer from the fruit and veg market stalls. That's just one of the reasons I love the country. Also you don't have to take out a mortgage to go and see some football matches

I've been a father for years and I'm just warning you - your life is no longer yours. It's all about the kid now. I hope you didn't have any plans or ambitions left to fulfill, because you can kiss them goodbye. Good luck!

I'm incredibly shy though. Countless times I've wanted to spark up conversation with someone but not had the balls. Saying that I'm getting slightly better at that. For example, during the Olympics at 2 of the 5 events I went to, I ended up chatting with someone.

I second that, although it was a long time ago I went, I can still remember it well.

What happened last night? Every-one was very quiet? Were we all glued to the Ryder Cup or drowning our sorrows? I was doing both and this morning my head hurts!

I watched the end of the golf; nice two points at the end, but too little too late.

I too spent some time in 'touring' germany when I was in the forces, and it was one day at Fallingbostel, that we were told why some of the streets there were cobbled. Belsen wasn't that far away, so we went for a visit. Very moving. Almost a horror fascination.

I found Germany a brilliant country. Very welcoming and very clean.

Maybe one day, I could manage to live out there.

This Ryder cup stuff is quite exciting. Still think Europe have too much to do.
