Broke the record for highest jump and highest manned balloon, broke the sound barrier, but didn't break the record for longest freefall.

That was amazing...bit frightening when he was tumbling. How did they land him so accurately....I imagined him landing in the Atlantic.

What a feat.......Strewth what a fall......looks like he hasn't broken all the records......but hey what a tremendous feat of freefall. To get out of that spin he had on the way down took some skill. I don't know if you realised but just before he jumped you could see what looked like a patch of Sand down below on the ground I think that is what they were aiming for. Brilliant................

Bloody hell. The forces that he created by freefalling for over 4 minutes would be huge. Hurtling towards Earth at over 700mph is just ludicrous! I bet he was ****ting himself on the 2 hour journey going up! What courage he showed in doing that. If anything went even slightly wrong he would now be dead. What a legend!

Am I the only person to have watched this on the news and thought "Ok, brave man, big achievement, etc..... but why and what does it prove or how does it benefit?"

I put this point earlier, but, having thought about it, decided that there often spin off benefits to any research that is often not envisaged at the time. Advances in technology are normally fastest during war (sadly), so there have to be other drivers for research and development during peacetime. This is often sport and other forms of entertainment. Having said that I dread to think what that record attempt cost.

I eagerly await the announcement that it has cured some horrible disease or that I am now entitled to be thrown 24 miles off a chair and my dodgy back will be cured.

I know you are joking, but there will have been research into stresses on human physiology and how to protect against a hostile environment done in this record attempt. There are always spin offs from this sort of thing, but the real intent was merely a record attempt and no doubt money generation for investors. Still doesn't change the fact that he was a brave man...the same sort of bravery that explorers have shown throughout the centuries. I have always considered that those sailors who set off to sail round the world when others told them they would fall off the edge showed more courage than astronauts who at least knew what they faced. Soap box folded away under the stairs now:)

Following the Canadian success in breaking a huge cheese smuggling ring, they have recorded another victory after seizing 600 barrels of maple syrup that had been stolen from Quebec's global strategic reserve (their words!).

Hope you find one FLT. My eldest has just started learning at school. Amazing language and a lot more difficult than French!

I was ok at French, mange tout, mange tout! My lad goes to a language school and will be learning six languages. I am keeping an eye out for Mandarin for him.
