I call that courageous. The manager has a vision and a way he likes to play, and he doesn't want players who don't suit his methods.

They should have adopted a "hoofball" approach, lumping it forward to Carroll and knocking it down to Gerrard to wack it in the goal.

I disagree. Villa Boas has done a simmiler thing at Spurs. He has one of the best keepers in the world, and he goes and signs a new one. Why? Just so he can say "that's my keeper". I personally think a manager should come in and manage the team he's got, especially as they tend to get sacked after a few seasons.

Because Brad Friedel is 41? Villas Boas is doing a very good job there, all things considered. He's implementing his own style, which is getting the best out of Defoe, and means they don't build their team around their playmaker anymore.

They could have signed Lloris and loaned him back out, or bought in a younger keeper. It just seemed premature to me, with the form Friedel is in.

I'm with Oli on that one. He's right up there in my opinion.

I'd stop short of calling him one of the best in the world, but he is a fine keeper.

he is a pretty good keeper, but there are 3 or 4 better than him in the premier league alone.

Well I'll take notice of your post, Lamb.

Mainly, because I suggested he'd go back to Bournemouth & Boscombe Utd, anyway. ;)

The statement over Burnley's website must have been slightly nauseating to read though. I would imagine the Burnley fans were thinking... just GO, if you're going..! :)

Friedel has been consistently performing very well in the best league in the world for several years. He's up there for sure.

That last sentence is a little naive Oli. Good managers in any job do things in their own style. You have to consider why a new manager has gone in to the role in the first place; in football it is usually because someone has been sacked.

In Brendan Rogers case, he has taken over at a club that has fallen a long way behind its fairly recent, glorious history. I believe the owners have understood what made that club so good/big in the past and want Rogers to get back to that. I admire him and them for trying that as long as they give it reasonable time.

That makes a lot of sense when I think of my job: come in, move personnel around, do things in my own style, It's what I get paid for. I just can't make an Andy Carroll comparison to my job though; the guy was signed last season for how much?! The board approved his signing, and now they're almost saying "we were wrong, he's not good enough, use the teenagers". It just seems like a waste.

Well that wasn't the first time that someone has accused me of being biased when refereeing their game. But it was the first time that someone recorded me during the match as evidence! Grrrrrr........ just had to get that out of my system.
