Well henceforth, I'm happy to refer to you as Doc. Maybe even The Doc, on occasion. :)

I've a couple of friends with SIIs, and one with a iPhone 4G. There's also one with an HTC One S. Two have Blackberries [Or is it Blackberrys..?]. I have a simple Nokia which, upto now has been good enough. Besides, I have been waiting for phones to break through all of the hype, and the technology to be actually capable of what it is supposed to be capable of. That has been the case for a while now, but I've been waiting for next generation phones to come in, to bring the price down. And here we are...

Have to say that the iPhone 4G is impressive in its style and speed, and its rugged feel, but the contract price is still daunting. The Galaxy SII seems a little flimsier, but then again it's all about priorities. I tend to look after my possessions, so it would probably survive my attentions. The specification is impressive, as is the Android OS and, as mentioned before, they are getting cheaper by the week, contract wise. The Blackberry is something from a few years ago, in my opinion. Good, but I'll pass. The HTC is a great phone, but the SII seems a little better almost everywhere.

    Other candidates..? Sony, Nokia, etc..?

I've got an HTC and about the only thing it has over my friend's SII is that it hasn't needed to be sent off for repairs yet, whereas his SII broke down quite early on. I'm not sure if it's a common issue with Samsung phones but other than that it's as you say - a little better in almost every way

My HTC has been pretty good to me, but I've never tried a Samsung. Either way, it's good to be on Android. I've always avoided Apple products because I think they're well overpriced for what they are, because they're basically a hipster fashion accessory. I don't know a lot about the other candidates, but I think you're right to give Blackberry a miss.

That HTC case is a good polycarbonate isn't it..? I like its durability but, as mentioned before, I tend to look after things. A timely reminder though, I must look into some insurance. Maybe I'll look to see if my House Contents will cover it.

I've nearly got to the end of my HTC Wildefire S's two year contract, and despite throwing it around on a daily basis it is still in one piece. I have been paying insurance though, which now seems stupid =/

Yes, I have the same problem with them, Joe. I appreciate that they are carefully marketed and positioned, and as an innovator of using flourishing technologies, one has to hand it to Apple for being in there, but the company would be wasting their time if they decided to advertise to me. Apple are often helping to make the new market for those hipsters to part with their money and, as a result, it makes it better for the rest of us when those people queue for their latest stuff, because genuine good product, from various companies, at competitive prices come about just a year or two later.

A lot of young people seem to like it a lot though and by young I mean 18 or above. As kids cartoons go, it seems alright but I don't get the huuuuge amount of hype it gets.

Ah..! Hmm, I may be guilty. I'll leave you to judge, and give you an example. Occasionally, my nieces will send me Youtube videos of so-called cute animals or situations. Here's an example:

I'm sorry Pepys, but I'm firmly in the... aah, that's sooo cute category, on that one. I can only take so many of these though before my hand starts to clench into a fist. :)

Anyone want to recommend a good MP3 player that's cheaper than an iPod, then? Around 50GB capacity.

I would have thought the same as you, but since I got my Blackberry it has been extremely addictive.

My missus just got a Sony Experia Y for 150 and I swear it does everything the new iphone does. If anything it#s a better design and fits in the hand better.
