Just had a thought, if we end up selling Lallana, would we have a case in refusing to pay his loyalty payments or whatever, if, as rumoured (I know it's not necessarily true) he has said he wants to leave? I know it's not a formal transfer request, but would it stand up in court (if he/we were to take it to that) that he told us he wanted to leave, and so wasn't being loyal or whatever?

Probably because, rather like you with your futile wind-ups, he's an annoying little tit at times.

I don't see how he could have turned the little lad down without looking mean and we have no proof he made any comment. As for not wanting to hand in a transfer request, it may not be the money, he may not want to look bad in our eyes (I've seen plans work out better :))....doubt he has stopped loving Saints...just like Rickie never stopped loving Liverpool.

Its simply...a transfer request would cost Adz circa £6m in loyalty payments (3 yrs left on his contract x £2m a year salary)
Damned if I would put one in unless the new offer compensated for this

Loyalty payments are not the entire salary. They are a deferred signing-on fee. Probably talking tens of thousands, not millions.

The lack of a transfer request is most likely because it's essentially burning your bridges. He is far from assured of getting a move so he won't want to make it difficult for him to remain at the club. If it comes down to the last week of the window and Liverpool are still interested, that's the time for a transfer request, not now.

I'm not entirely sure on how loyalty bonuses work, but it surely can't be £6m

If this is about ambition as he states, rather than money, then why not? He'll get a new loyalty bonus at Liverpool.

I just always assumed loyalty bonuses were far smaller

They should look at Ross Barkley I'm sure Everton would be tempted by £30m.

I'm not 100% certain now that Lallana ever loved Saints. He is starting to come across as one of those opportunistic footballers who has a sound bite for every occasion. Patting the badge and praising the club is simply about making sure he stays popular where it suits him.

Rickie was more open in his comments and never hid his love of Liverpool which is why no one begrudges the move.

Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with footballers being a bit mercenary and moving to improve their career. It's just that MLT types (and to be honest I was starting to think Lallana might be another) don't come around too often. And worth remembering that it was more than just the club that kept Matty here. It was the whole lifestyle in the club and in the local area. He has really strong friendships throughout hampshire. And we do have some great golf courses!!

Sorry but thats just rubbish. Emotions and ambitions change as you grow older but of course he loves the club.

Don't get me wrong. I have on doubt he loved the journey of the last five years with the club.

  16. Blimey! I don't know why you're taking that attitude, especially after all we did for you.

    Have you forgotten Glenn Hoddle?

    Or Tommy Forecast.

Lambert is the exception, though. I think he is probably just naturally a nice guy on the human niceness scale, but on top of that his whole journey through football gave him some perspective. Lambert had played for 5-6 clubs before he even came to Saints so I think he had a better idea of the business side of football and how great it is just to be playing as a pro at all.

I still don't think Lallana is a bad guy. I do think he stuck with Saints to some degree out of loyalty, but when a team like Liverpool comes calling it's a whole different ballgame. I blame him for being an idiot more than for disloyalty. The best way for him to get a transfer would have been to put his head down, have a great WC and then Liverpool or someone else might have met Saints' valuation (and he'd up his own wages to boot). There would have been fewer upset fans, and those that were upset would blame the board for accepting the offer instead of Lallana.

This is the trouble with the transfer system and the sort of tapping up style which clubs use. We know Lallana and his agent spoke with Liverpool months ago. They would have discussed his earnings, probably his role in the team. I expect Lallana expected £20m( A Saints record sale) would be enough. In his mind he has left Saints, but like a bad house move it's hit a snag.

Add to this Lambert being allowed to go and I can see why Lallana has got frustrated with the situation

£25m plus add ons has been hinted pre World Cup. If he has as good a World Cup as we think he will (he is an undoubted talent) then surely we should be pushing for £30m plus add ons?
