Can't belive Hamilton made it onto that list. He is nowhere near as good as these drivers on that list.
I'm a Hammy fan and I wouldn't have put him in that list. On his day he's sublime and when he burst on to the scene he looked like he might be the next big thing. He's got a lot of career left though and plenty of time to make his mark on the sport. I hope he's able to do just that. But if he doesn't, he's at least provided me with a ton of entertainment... He' certainly not boring to watch.
Wait.... Driver A always had a top car... Driver B only ever won in a Reliant Robin. You know the drill!
As not being a Hamilton fan he deserves to be in the top 20! Sometimes past drivers get too much ass kissing and they deserve to be criticised that they would not beat this generation.
I don't think comparisons between the current line-up and past masters really work. However, I think most would agree that Alonso and Hamilton are both drivers who may well be be regarded as masters at the end of their careers. Hamilton, I believe, would have won the championship in his first year were it not for the political repercussions which ensued towards the end. He certainly deserved to. The McLaren after 2007/2008 was never quite the same and only occasionally competitive enough for wins, which Lewis achieved. 2011 was the only year he lost that form. This year he seems to be dogged with bad luck and a sometimes incompetent team but hopefully that will change. It was the same for Alonso, but he and Ferrari have turned that around. As for Vettel, he's not yet on the list, although with the likes of DC, Jake and EJ voting that's a foregone conclusion.
I disagree about Hamilton, I think he's a good driver who still has a chance of being a master, but right now he's not there, and I think there is a much bigger chance of him slipping into obscurity. If he gets dumped from McLaren at the end of this year because he’s asking for too much money, and is never in a winning car again, his place on this list will look silly. Also if you look at 2007 you say Hamilton should off, could off won that championship, but I would say that if Alonso got any support from McLaren during the second half off the year then 100% he would off been the champion.
I somehow can't see Hamilton slipping into obscurity or being dumped by McLaren. If he's given a decent car for the rest of the year I'm sure he'll make full use of it. The reason he's not there at the moment is surely down to McLaren. I think Alonso was certainly unhappy at McLaren and if it hadn't been for Hamilton he probably would have won the championship that year but I guess we won't find out the truth about that years tomfoolery until someone decides to put it in print.
I think Hamilton is more likely to slip into obscurity than become a true great of the sport. I very well could be wrong, but I think he's more likely to be a also ran than being rememebred as a Senna/Clark etc. He's a very good driver and he's certainly top5 on the grid today. I would say that overall McLaren have had the best car so far this season, I would expect Hamilton to be closer to the front than he currently is, which sort of supports my view of him slipping into obscurity.
Hamilton needs the best car to win while Alonso or peak schumacher and even vettel don't need the best car.
Alonso scored two wins and a number of podiums in the second half of the 2007 season - in fact I think he might even have done better than the first half - so I'm not sure what your point is... it was his unfortunately timed retirement in Japan combined with Raikkonen's astonishing consistency that did for him that season, unlike Hamilton who distinctly threw away the championship with two rookie errors at China and Brazil. I'm aware he WAS a rookie but that's the facts.
The makes me really wonder what is going on in that little mind of Benson's. One minute he's putting down Hamilton and promoting Button and Alonso, the next he's putting down Alonso and Schumacher. And still there's no mention of Webber and Vettel. Surely a 'Chief F1 writer' should be completely impartial? And don't even get me stared on his lack of analysis......
You mean the accidentally hitting the pit-lane limiter button? I was referring to his childish effort to overtake Alonso at the beginning which dropped him down the field, but I'm pretty sure that gearbox issue was proven to be at least partially Hamilton's fault. It certainly wouldn't have affected him so badly had he not been out of position anyway.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/9119332.stm How can you you come to the conclusion that he hit the pit lane limiter? He made a mistake under braking and went wide. If he hadn't of had the gearbox problem on lap 7, he more than likely would have overtook enough people to win the championship, his pace was clearly good enough as he caught the guys that he needed to overtake for the championship by the end of the race. Anyway back on topic, I expected Alonso to be a bit higher, and certainly higher than Vettel if Vettel will be in the list. I think he's peaking again this year, as he did in 2005 and 2006, but now he is, and I hate to use this phrase, more 'complete' than he was back then. He reads races very well, which is probably why he's won the races he has this season. I admit I don't like him very much, mostly because of his personality and what happened between 2007 and 2009, but I do still regard him as one of, if not, the best driver on the grid
