Bassong is only 25, which is young for a central defender, as they usually only reach the peak of their abilities in their late 20s / early 30s.

I think the lad has the potential to improve over the next few seasons, but that will obviously depend on the amount of games he's able to get under his belt.

Younes Kaboul, on the other hand, is almost the same age as Bassong but looks like a far more accomplished player.

<ok> This! As much as I loved Bassong, he left us because he thought he could do better. Whilst he is at a more successful club, he isn't playing anywhere nearly as much as he probably would've been if he'd never left us. Same with the likes of Beye, Edgar and Martins. They would've been better off staying but were too proud to play in the Championship.

he's a decent enough player, but don't think he's top 4 material so not good enough for us.

he could probably hold his own for a team looking for a fifth/sixth place in the table, so'd be better off staying at spurs

    :)

Have to disagree with this, he was better off coming to us. He played in the Prem while you were in the Championship, then he played in the CL and now he's playing in the EL as well as the Prem. I bet he's glad he left Newcastle for Spurs, he also probably increased his wages considerably too.

Obviously I have to assume you are saying this firmly tongue in cheek, but otherwise classic deluded Geordie nonsense :)

In Bassong's time at Spurs we have been far more successful than Newcastle, and I am completely confident we will be more successful than you this season also. :)

Well he's been whinging his tits off for the last two seasons that he's not getting a game and that Redknapp barely acknowledges him. His bank balance is better off for sure though.

I surely don't have to tell you that the media often distort/make up stories. In King we have one of the greatest CBs ever to grace our club, indeed he's now in my all-time Spurs XI. We also have a top player in Kaboul and last year a top player in Gallas, plus Dawson an England international who has often been our captain, and is a whole-hearted Spurs player. It's very hard for Bassong to get past those players.

Bassong made an upward career move coming to Spurs, has gained vital experience playing for one of the top clubs in England, and has made a mint in increased wages plus signing-on fees. He may feel it's time to move on in the summer, (I don't expect him to leave in January, unless we get knocked out of the EL).

I can't speak for him, but from an outsider's point of view, I would say he was better off, career-wise and money-wise in making the move.

I reckon you will go for Cahill again in January. Then Bassong would probably leave. Maybe even in part exchange

Yep, if we go for Cahill, then that's a possibility. Not sure about the wages though, we're not the biggest payers, but I assume we pay more than Bolton. Maybe Seb will have to take a pay cut to ensure regular first-team football. Players tend not to be too keen on that though :)

We'll see, I'm just glad we have him ATM. When he trots out at Rovers, it'll be his third game in 8 games, he's very important to us at present.

Well that's the thing, you're saying it's hard for him to get into the first team because he's not as good as those other players, but he's better off financially. It's a shame that's what most footballers want these days. You also say he may have to take a pay cut to play first team football in another post, but he'd probably still be playing first team football now had he never left Newcastle in the first place, thus not having to have jumped ship at the first chance he could to add some zeros onto his bank balance.

Still, I'm happy we made a fortune selling a player that cost us half a million quid.

But the point is it wasn't just money, he went to a better team. Though I'm sure money played a big part in the decision too.

As I said, he's been worth every penny to us, so just as you are glad he went so I am glad he joined us. It seems a win-win situation, however maybe some of your fans don't see it that way. You got promotion without him and now doing well in the Prem, so it doesn't seem you've missed him, whereas we have plenty of money and have earnt a whole stack more since Seb joined, so the money was well spent for us.

I obviously can't speak for Bassong, but my guess is that he'll be glad he made the move, as he's stayed in the Prem and now played European football two seasons running, plus he's earnt a lot more money than had he stayed put.

Spurs finishing fourth with him playing in central defence in 28 of our league games doesn't make him Top 4 material? Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight...

Given that he's now, what 5th choice? He might look back and think long term he'd have been better off playing here and being a regular for years than have one good season with Spurs then struggle to hold down a starting place.

Wouldn't touch the scumbag. Always surprises me folk say they want him back, but have nothing but hatred for the likes of Carroll, Enrique. They did more for this football club than he ever did. Both managed to be professional about taking their step up. I don't mind him going, it was a good move and a step up, but the way him and Martins went about getting their moves, the Orient debacle, he can rot in their reserves for ever more.
