Reading that I am nothing short of appalled by the way Barry has been treated by the club on the whole but particularly Martin Allen. Barry is a great player and should not of been released in the first place but the way he was led along and disrespected is dreadful. People sometimes forget that this is not the Premier League and there not all on £100,000 a week. They are real people with real problems, for example Barry now had a wife and kids to support with no job and the vast majority of pre-season wasted by Gillingham who never wanted to actually sign him. I have been impressed with Allen in many ways so far but this has really left a sour taste.
 
Infortunately thats what happens in football. I think I read at the weekend that he's on trial at Burton so he'll probaly get a contract somewhere else because he's certainly good enough for league football, but sometimes different types of players don't fit into certain managers plans. That is why theres no sentiment in football either by clubs or players for that matter. How many times do you see a player on a long contract ask to move because someone has offered him more money, or a club get rid of a player because a new manager doesn't want him. It happens all the time. Players know the score when they become professional and thats the risk they take.
 
I am not quite sure that I am appalled by the way Barry has been treated. His contract had expired and was just not renewed. He was allowed to continue training with the club to maintain his fitness, surely he could have freely walked away, any hopes are choices of is own. As for real people with real problems, sorry with no disrespect to Barry but such a suggestion would be over dramatics and I would suggest a look out in to the real world.

I agree with BRB, I'm sorry but I agree with Allen's decision to let him go, fair play to him he showed a lot of passion and desire but that can only get you so far in league football and he was found out on numerous occasions. I don't think he was treated particularly badly, Allen obviously needed to have a good look at him and just because he attends every training session doesn't give him a divine right to a contract... However, I wish him all the best, he was a great servant to the club and hope he manages to remain in the football league.
 
Good luck to Barry but there is no room for sentiment. He was out of contract and obviously does not figure in MAs style of play so was best for all not to renew his contract.
 
We aren't a charity, Fuller is an average player, who was out of contract. Allen wasn't obliged to re-sign him. Wish him all the best for the future, but not good enough for the Gills.
 
Who else do we have at the moment at RB who is better than Fuller? Please don't try and claim Evans or Fish are better cause that is what we call a lie.
 
if you read the article he says he's disappointed but understands so i dont think hes been treated all that badly. plenty of players in his situation would have just been shown the door at the end of his contract without so much as a good luck. if he/his agent wasnt putting his name around in case all the time he was training with the gills then i really think he has missed a trick there. anyways best of luck to him
 
Best of luck to Fuller but I don't feel the club in anyway has done anything wrong or disrespectful. He was out of contract and as he had been out of action for pretty much the whole of last season the manager gave him an opportunity to show how he was, Allen also did the same with Weston but Curtis turned down the opportunity in order to look elsewhere. There was no Guarantee that a contract would be offered if there was then the contract would have just been offered. I have to side with Mad Dog on this one as what's best for the club is more important than what's best for the player.

Thank you Barry for your time at the club and I hope you does get another club and should it be in league 2 then we know what we'll be up against.

Matt Fish has played one season in professional football whilst Jack Evans is an up and coming young player who featured in a handful of games last season.

I was a big fan of Fuller and was sad to see him go but if Martin Allen doesn't want him, he doesn't want him.

To state a preference for either of those two would render us "liars" is extremely disrespectful.
 
Fish was phenomenal last year. He only became a full time pro last August and due to circumstances he was thrown in at the deep end in September when he was as green as the pitch. Sure he made mistakes he was expected to be given half a season to adjust to the new pace. When he came back into the team after Christmas he and Essam were the strongest right side of any defence seen at Priestfield and the most mobile. I said on here back in March that there was no way back for Fuller and got ridiculed. There were not many people ridiculing who watched the team over the final couple of months.

Last year, and given that I went on Saturday it appears that he hasn't changed in the slightest, he gave the ball away 50% of the time he had it. In certain games he was punished by wingers and single handedly at fault for goals. He is not good enough for a team who want to get promoted from League 2.

In regards to Fuller, I don't feel he is a big miss, personality and desire yes, but littel technical ability. In my opinion, we need a new LB and RB, unless of course Allen is thinking of Jackman at LB.

Have to agree i thought Fish was poor last year when he played! Pace alone which he has is not enough to get by, i did not see much technical ability! Fuller i dont think will cut it as an attacking full back hence he was let go and really would like us to get in a new pair of full backs otherwise we are going to be exposed in this area just like last season!

Fish made too many mistakes last season to be given the number of games that he played. He got a bit better towards the end - but in no way can he be described as phenominal !
I am prepared to support him ( and my other favourite player - Frampton ) - but if any player is not good enough, I hope MA will not wait as long as Hess before changes.
 
I thought it was about time to stir you up always and I did acknowledge my willingness to be ridiculed (or proved right). You are of course linking two strands of argument, one of which (Fish) is an opinion which you have every right to disagree with, and a second one (players of 36 and over) where there is absolutely overwhelming statistical evidence to support my point of view. Never let the facts interfere with an opinion especially when there are rare exceptions to generalisations.
 
bristol - having watched much rubbish by Gills over a loooooooooooooooong time - sadly you could never come as close to winding me up.
I apologise for agreeing with you about Burton - and you didn't expect me ( or many others ) to share your appreciation of Fish.
 
Always. i accept your humble apology for agreeing with half of my controversial suggestions and we can of course, see who was right about Fish in about 9 months time. I have a suspicion that Allen (who I regard as a complete idiot in every other respect) is showing signs of agreeing with me. This only goes to show that he and I are both idiots.

As far as it relates to GFC, I bet I've been an idiot longer than you ! ( and long may it continue )
