The Monkees' Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork.
Review: The Monkees -The Mike & Micky Show, Michale Fowler Centre, June 10.

Even if I can't recall who said it to me, I can recall the statement.

"How can you like the Beatles and the Monkees!" As if I had to make a choice. I love both so bah humbug whoever you were.

They did not play The Theme from The Monkees, out of respect for the loss of Peter Tork and Davy Jones.
Part and parcel of this infatuation with the Monkees was the time we lived in. The assassinations of the Kennedy boys and Martin Luther King Jr shook our world as did the Vietnam war. So, we had Woodstock and we flew to the moon and the Monkees came along for the ride.

Like a game of football, it's game of two halves.

The poor sound that plagued the Christchurch show followed them up here, but after the interval just about everything touched was sprinkled with fairy dust. On stage was a 10-piece band that had Nesmith's son on Guitar and Dolenz's sister on backing vocals.

At times there seemed an unnecessary six guitars playing.

As Nesmith mentioned early on, "when the song's only last two and a half minutes you can squeeze a lot in" and a mark of respect for the loss of Peter Tork and Davy Jones, the Theme from The Monkees was not played.

But with a list that covered Last Train To Clarksville, A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You, Daydream Believer, Randy Scouse Git, and a wonderful, I'm A Believer in which we the audience sang out hearts out you could not fault them for that, such was the reverence. Much of this is due to a maniacal sense of humour from Nesmith and some wonderful stage posturing from Dolenz.

And as great as these songs were, and they are more than just nostalgia, the audience received the newer work on the Good Times album, in which the turned to composers such as Noel Gallagher and Paul Weller as well as members from Weezer, XTC and Death Cab For Cutie with a warm reverence.

My favourite was Nesmith's Flying Down to Rio, but everybody would have gone home more than satisfied

I thought the 6 guitars was great
