Why not? He doesn't literally mean Barnsley. It is an allegory for all small former mining communities and other northern communities blighted by Thatcher and the author is suggesting, I suspect, that on current performance we may, yet again, be playing against teams from such communities rather than the conurbations of the North. Either that or he's been smoking too much skunk.
I wanted to use Burton as an unfashionable match but I suspect they might go down.

Ah Burton. The day we signed Osvaldo, my son rang and asked if I wanted to go with him to see Burton V Pompey in Div 2 (he had been invited as a guest) and I loved it. We sign an Italian international and the Skates are set to play Burton. Seemed funny at the time.
